Raised within the confinements of a strict Gambian-Muslim household, Mariamu often felt trapped by cultural expectations placed her both at home and from her community. Forced to navigate between two worlds, she spent most of her childhood figuring out what being both African and American meant to her. On this week’s podcast, we sit down with Mariamu to unpack generational trauma, growing pains and how therapy has aided in her healing process. Together, we recall the collection of experiences Mariam has acquired that have shaped her to be the bubbly and brilliant boss lady that she is today!

Meet Lewis is Dead, the South Jersey-based rapper/producer that is taking the industry by storm. At 26, Lewis has written and produced two albums (Darko and Riverwolf). Inspired by films, LID sound is dark, airy and grungy. We sat down with the up and coming musician to talk about the need for visual representation, the power of legacy and how musicians can successfully make it in today’s clout-based era of music.

Happy New Year!  We are starting off this year with a re-introduction of our host, Rahilou Diallo, the founder of The Toilet Podcast. Born in Guinea, West Africa Rahilou grew up in a male-dominated community that placed men at a higher status causing women to be at a disadvantage. Fueled by the injustices against women in Guinea, Rahilou moved to the United States at age 6,  determined to take charge of her future.  Join us as we get to know the woman behind the Toilet Podcast, and how her choice to actively unlearn cultural expectations has allowed her to defy family cultural expectations and work towards defining her identity.
