What is happening in Palestine pt 2: life in Gaza & the West Bank

We welcome Khaled and Omar from UoM Friends of Palestine Society 🇵🇸 who spoke to us about how life is like for Palestinian citizens in Gaza, the West Bank and other occupied Palestinian territories. From a young age, Khaled and Omar, born and raised in Gaza and the West Bank respectively, have experienced many hardships implemented on them from Israeli forces, illegal settlements, and inequitable laws. They speak about their personal stories, which are applicable to those of the millions of Palestinians living under this colonial state; and the effects of the ongoing apartheid in terms of healthcare, education, employment and housing.

How difficult is it to travel into Palestine? What are the views of the neighbouring Arab countries? How are Palestinian civilians' mental health and general living conditions affected? This episode answers all the above questions and is filled with statistics, factual information and first-hand anecdotes that will better your understanding of the Palestinian cause.

What is happening in Palestine: a brief history & the current situation

What is happening in Palestine: a brief history & the current situation

In this episode, Adnan from UoM Friends of Palestine society gives us a brief history of the Palestinian genocide, from the 1917 Balfour Declaration, the 1948 Nakba (catastrophe in Arabic) and the 1967 Naksa (6-day war) to the forced occupation and ethnic cleansing that has been happening for the past 73 years till this day.

We also discuss what is currently happening, to Palestinian families forcefully evicted from their own homes in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah, the military attack on the Gaza Strip, which has caused hundreds of injuries and more than 200 deaths; and the implausible raids of the 3rd holiest site in Islam, Al-Aqsa Mosque.

What triggered the recent upsurge on social media? How does the media portray the situation? What is the problem with using terminology such as “conflict”, “clash” and “war”? Why is the IOF attacking multiple Palestinian territories at once? These are all questions we answer in this informative episode.
