Non-musical history for today: 1791 – King Louis XVI, disguised as a valet, and the French royal family attempted to flee Paris during the French Revolution. Louis's indecision, many delays, and misunderstanding of France were responsible for the failure of the escape. Within 24 hours, the royal family was arrested at a small monastery town after Jean-Baptiste Drouet recognized the king from his profile on paper money (called livres) and had given the alert. Louis and his family were taken back to Paris. Viewed suspiciously as traitors, they were placed under tight house arrest upon their return to the large palace known as Tuileries.

Non-musical history for today: 1953 – Cold War: Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed at Sing Sing Prison, in New York. While there were several pushes to award clemency to the Rosenbergs, later evidence, known as the Venona encryptions, had actual audio of them selling secrets to the KGB.

Non-musical history for today: 1858 – Charles Darwin received a paper from Alfred Russel Wallace that included nearly identical conclusions about evolution as Darwin's own, prompting Darwin to publish his theory. I believe him, by the way. It's okay if you don't.

Non-musical history for today: 1963 – The United States Supreme Court rules 8–1 in Abington School District v. Schempp against requiring the reciting of Bible verses and the Lord's Prayer in public schools. Let's hope that holds up. I don't care if you do your own verses and prayers, but don't force it on me, and don't expect me to do it.

Non-musical history for today: 1858 – Abraham Lincoln delivered his House Divided speech in Springfield, Illinois.

Lincoln quoted the Bible: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." Then he said,: I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved – I do not expect the house to fall – but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other.
