Bottling Memories, Ethical Fragrance, and Creating Scents for Connection ft Maya Njie, Owner of Maya Njie Perfumes
After spending the past year developing my own fragrance, I’ve become obsessed with learning more about the process of developing fragrance. Maya Njie, an artist and self-taught perfumer, was the perfect person to dive deep on fragrance with. During our conversation Maya and I explored the scent composition of some of her top perfumes while discussing how significant her family history has been in building her business. We also talked about the unique experience of trying to capture feelings and translate them into scents that can be experienced by people internationally, the nuances of building an ethical business, and the surreal feeling of being sold in Liberty London.
Tune in as we discuss:
How she incorporates family photos and color palettes into each perfumeWhy synthetic fragrances may be safer options for our bodies and environmentsWhat kinds of mentorship and support small brands need to thrive Why fragrance is often hard to break into Why spending time with a fragrance is the best way to learn if it is truly for you

Haircare is for Dads, Too ft. Charlotte Mensah, Owner of Hair Lounge
While speaking with Charlotte Mensah, she shared her expertise in caring for Afro-textured hair, with products, tools, and styling recommendations. Charlotte also revealed how significant it was for her to grow up surrounded by family, having her hair done and styling it for others. Our conversation illuminated her decision to develop the Curl Power Workshop, an annual haircare and hairstyling event where adults learn to care for the Afro-textured hair of the children they love. For the second year, the workshop focuses on teaching fathers and grandfathers the skills they need to master hair care.
Tune in as we discuss:
The workshop’s origins as support for biracial parentsHow important it is that children see one another and the similarities in their hairHer hopes that his workshop takes the onus off moms to have to do it allWhy patience is the most important tool in children’s hair styling

From defending herself against racist bullies to using hair styling to grieve the loss of her mother, Charlotte’s incredible journey revealed that for her, hair was never just about beautification.
