#610 - Katie Arnold: The Return of a Running and Writing Legend

#610 - Katie Arnold: The Return of a Running and Writing Legend

Katie Arnold is back on the podcast and I couldn't be more excited!!!
Katie was first on the show in 2019 when we talked about her amazing book Running Home.
In this episode, Katie returns to talk about her new book that is out this week, Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World. It’s about many things—love, friendship, running, mountains, rivers—and how to how to apply timeless Zen teachings to running/endurance.
Much like Running Home, Brief Flashings is not a prescriptive, how-to book but a rather personal narrative that includes wisdom and offerings that can be applied to running and life. Katie uses anecdotes from her own experiences - suffering and recovering from a devastating wilderness accident, healing, and going on to win Leadville 100 - to illustrate your unlimited potential (and resulting happiness) when you run with the mind of Zen.
This is not an overtly Zen proselytizing book. You can apply these teachings even if you’re not religious (Katie's not), no matter what your spiritual tradition or where you are in the pack. Like Running Home, it goes way beyond running.
You can buy Katie's new book here: www.amazon.com/dp/1952692695?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_G3DABZR2ZPA7AG39TH16.

#609 - Mary Johnson: My Favorite Workouts

#609 - Mary Johnson: My Favorite Workouts

Welcome to a new bi-weekly series called "My Favorite Workouts."
For the remainder of 2024 I'll be speaking with coaches and elite athletes about the workouts they love the most, why they love them, the distances/races they are best for, and alterations that can be made for people of differing abilities and fitness levels.
In our third episode of this series I am joined by Mary Johnson.
Mary has been coaching runners since 2016 and started Lift Run Perform in 2017. She has worked with hundreds of runners while also being a high-end amateur runner herself. In this episode she details her favorite speed session and her favorite long run workout. She also covers how she thinks about speed volume as a percentage of an athletes weekly total volume, which is something we haven't covered before on this podcast.

#607 - Ron Romano: The Happiest Marathoner

#607 - Ron Romano: The Happiest Marathoner

Ron Romano may be the happiest guy in running. Not only that, he’s worked hard to become one heck of a runner. He’s run 50+ marathons (with a PR of 2:40) and is a veritable wealth of knowledge on all things running. After taking a nine year break from racing he roared back with abandon and became an elite masters runner. He has also become a staple at World Marathon Majors and has a wealth of information on how to approach these races to have the best experience, running and otherwise, possible.

#605 - Gary Koutsoubos: Losing 75 lbs. and Regaining His Running Life

#605 - Gary Koutsoubos: Losing 75 lbs. and Regaining His Running Life

From 20 to 40 years of age, Gary Koutsoubos gave up on running. The former high school and junior college runner had put that era of his life in the past. Instead, he opted for a sedentary lifestyle that left him overweight and unhealthy. After turning 40, Gary decided that enough was enough.
Now at 48 years old, Gary is one of the best 45-49 year old marathoners in the country. It is a remarkable turnaround and a story that continues to grow. Next month Gary will be running the Boston Marathon and aiming to break his 2:55 PR and possibly go under 2:50!
You can follow Gary at www.instagram.com/garyisarunner.
