    Specialised Commercial Crimes Court releases IEC Commissioner, Dr Nomsa Masuku on R20 000 bail

     IEC Commissioner Dr Nomsa Masuku has been granted R20 000 bail by the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court. Sixty-two-year-old Masuku was arrested on Friday by the Hawks for alleged fraud amounting to R1.2 million. For more on this, Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Police spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale.

    Charlotte Van Der Weshuizen, the wife of a child killer and former top cop Marius van der Westhuizen says she does not believe that the country needs another child murderer out in the public. This comes as her former husband and father to her kids, Marius is set to be released on parole at the end of July. The former cop was granted parole after his third appearance before the parole board at the Malmasbury Correctional Center on Tuesday. He murdered his children who were aged 16, five and 21 months at their home in 2006 to punish his wife, Charlotte.     As Vodacom's forensic liaison supervisor Pinky Vythilingam is expected to go over cellphone tower locations, the defence in the Senzo Meyiwa trial have raised concern that some areas are not depicted on the map. The trial has been delayed this morning in order to allow for the defence to consult with the accused. Vythilingam is on the stand at the high court in Pretoria to unpack more evidence pertaining to cellphone data and towers.     Data released by Statistics South Africa shows that the price of goods have remained steady over the past two months, as the consumer price index held at 5,2-percent in May, unchanged from April 2024. The data indicates that after five consecutive months of decline, prices for food non-alcohol beverages remained unchanged at 4,7-perdent in May from April. However higher rates were recorded for transport, alcoholic beverages and tobacco,  while softer prices were recorded for miscellaneous goods and services, communication, clothing and footwear, as well as restaurants and hotels.     A Researcher and Lecturer at Wits University, Dr Gilad Isaacs says the 2.5 percent salary increase for MPs in the seventh Parliament, will not have much impact on the public purse. Earlier this year President Cyril Ramaphosa approved the salary increase for MPs, members of the provincial legislatures and Premiers. New MPs will be earning about R1.27 million annually or hundred thousand a month. Dr Isaacs says while these increases may be relatively high compared to ordinary workers -- they are not above inflation. Abongwe Kobokana reports...
