In my second episode of Marie, Myself, and I, I talk about how I experience my mind versus how others around me experience theirs. The difference is illuminating and sorrowful.

    Episode 1: Truth Begets Truth

The very first episode of "Marie, Myself, & I". Today I talk about my proposed universal law of "Truth Begets Truth" as I review my weekend at the Everyone's Agnostic/Everyone's Autonomous retreat in Tennessee.

    Episode 53: Rebekah Monroe

    Episode 53: Rebekah Monroe

Today is the last "Everyone's Autonomous" episode. I was planning to just keep publishing on this feed but coincidentally, I have hit my storage limit so I will begin to "expire" old episodes of EA2 to make space for the new stuff. That said, a little about this episode! Rebekah was born at an air force base in Florida. She moved to a town of 12K in Missouri in 2nd grade. She grew up in a conservative evangelical setting, being fed all the narratives around sexual purity, gender roles, and more. She was a "good girl" and wanted to become a jazz singer. Her high school principal began to have a highly inappropriate relationship with her (and as it is revealed later, with others). Rebekah eventually moved to Chicago. She ended up going public with her experiences with the principal which caused a lot of vitriol from the community. She started NARC with other religious trauma researchers. We discuss the prevalence of patriarchy in our present mental health resources. We end discussing how psychology is going grassroots. It's great convo!

Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Together, we seek to rejoin the human race and participate in this chaotic experience of existence Thanks for listening and remember: You are autonomous and so is everyone else.

    Episode 52: Cassandra

    Episode 52: Cassandra

Cassandra's childhood was spent in Germany as a military kid. She moved to the U.S. at age 14 and was enrolled in a private, religious school. She took god for granted so when she heard about baptism, she didn't understand why that was necessary. Cassandra deconstructed her faith through her experiences as a parent and a childhood educator.

Now her passion is for children. She talks about how there is a lack of respect for children in our society. We deny that these are already fully formed human beings. She recommends giving our children more time to just be. To have their own time, pace, and to be part of a diverse community. She talks about how presently our society bullies and threatens our children. We forgot what it feels like to be a kid. Kids need to feel safe and secure to grow. Children are not silly or uneducated; nor are they constantly trying to manipulate or take advantage of adults. Kids want to do the right thing and please their parents. There's always a reason behind misbehavior. Cassandra and I explore how we as adults can transform the hurt inside us from our childhood and become better parents. . She suggests assuming kids are doing their best. PAUSE before trying to influence a child. Lastly we talk about how to parent yourself, some of that being: HAVE FUN! PLAY! and ENJOY YOUR *SELF*.

    Episode 51: Rhys

    Episode 51: Rhys

Rhys was born in Guam in a family of 8 children. Their mother died when they were 4 years old. They were taken away from their dad and moved from family to family. Their nomadic-type childhood allowed them to not overly attach to a particular family dynamic and, therefore, according to Rhys, allowed them to more easily process their trauma. Rhys committed themselves to Jesus at the age of 13 and felt loved. They began to feel confused and ashamed of the attraction they felt for others. They began to feel unsafe in their own body. Later, they found freedom while attending college and learning about human development. It broke their heart to lose their faith. Yet liberating as they realized they can now think about whatever they want to AND they can love people without any agenda to change them. Eventually they got divorced from their partner since they wanted to explore their sexuality with others. We discuss how platonic love is unfairly assumed to be at the bottom of the love hierarchy when we believe,... it's the top. We talk about how assigned-female-at-birth individuals are often royally f****d when their relationships end. Rhys discusses why this has resulted in their committing to not love with a sexual or romantic partner. We discuss cultivating large and vibrant communities for ourselves. And lastly, we explore what it's like to be a secular parent. How do we raise our children better than we were raised? How do we hold space for our children's emotions? And likewise, how do we hold space for that child that is still within our own selves? Join us - it's a great talk. Way too short, in my opinion.

    Episode 50: Pat Green

    Episode 50: Pat Green

Pat Green worked as a minister for 16 years before he became a taxi driver. He had joined an Assembly of God church when he was younger, finding mission and belonging, even though his passion for photography was seen as an "idol". He couldn't be himself and so he adopted "personality tofu". Raised by his grandparents from the "silent generation" he inherited their trauma of believing there are just some things we don't talk about. Pat's child came out as belonging to the queer community in 2012 and Pat woke up to that along with seeing Jay Bakker deviate from the standard Christian judgment of that community. Although Pat was growing, those in his Christian community and congregation no longer understood him as he was journeying into affirmation of identities. Pat was tired of everyone having an opinion about his child, so he took a year long sabbatical, got divorced, and stopped believing in 2015. He is now deeply passionate about the rights of the marginalized. His awareness of his own hangups and biases as a cishet white man is one of the things that directly drives his passion. We discuss the essential contributions of all our cultures and photography activism.
