All schools locally and globally will have social entrepreneurship as a core subject. The Scott Center empowers learners to engage deeply in complex challenges locally and globally. Created by Hillbrook School in order to better meet our vision - to inspire children to achieve their dreams and reach beyond themselves to make a difference in the world, the Scott Center ignites the changemaker in all students, nurturing the skills and mindsets to turn ideas into impact. In partnership with educators, social impact leaders, and entrepreneurs, the Scott Center seeks to cultivate a collaborative learning community that applies the best practices of social entrepreneurship. The Scott Center believes that building an entrepreneurial mindset requires on-going engagement with the six pillars of entrepreneurship education: design, story, civics, systems, finance and agency. Experiences both on and off campus deepen our connection to communities, push us to ask big questions, and imagine our roles in creating/shaping a more just and equitable world. Through the work of the Scott Center, students gain the confidence to answer and act upon our two guiding questions, What matters to you and what are you doing about it?

    Climate Action and Science

    Climate Action and Science

    Episode Notes
In this episode, we talk with Hillbrook Middle School science teacher Gale Shu and some of her sixth-grade students about teaching and learning climate action inside and outside of the classroom. Ms. Shu shares insights into what climate change education looks like at the sixth grade level, and students share favorite moments and practical takeaways from their climate change unit last fall. As one of their major projects, the students participated in the Team Seas Challenge, collecting a surprising amount of trash around campus in a competition between classes. The Scott Center helped the winning class make a donation to Team Seas, and we were so excited to hear from this group of sixth graders as they continue to develop a sense of agency around climate action.

This conversation was once again held in the Hillbrook science garden, and there was a lot of activity going on around us! Please be mindful of that as you choose your audio level.

    The Community Garden Project

    The Community Garden Project

    Episode Notes
We're back in the science garden at Hillbrook, this time for an exciting conversation with 6th-Grade English teacher Jenn Gingery and a group of awesome 6th-grade students. After reading Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman, students learned more about the impact of community gardens before working in teams to design their own. The Scott Center team helped choose the winners for this project, and we were blown away by the designs that included a specific focus on a Sustainable Development Goal. The winning teams got to chose an organization to receive a Scott Center donation. We are thrilled to speak with Ms. G and these students to hear more about this project, which helps us to imagine the world as it might be!
