    Season 2, Episode 15 - Citizen Kane

There is a man. A certain man. A man whose grace and handsome face are known across the land. You know his name. It’s Orson Welles! This week we’re talking about Citizen Kane, AKA the greatest movie ever made (before Paddington 2). It’s a quintessentially American story of a hollow billionaire running a media empire. Sort of like Succession but with Dutch angles. Tara and Jacob discuss Welles’ incredible debut feature, noted big twat William Randolph Hearst and the perils of the auteur theory. Plus, you know we’ve got to shout out our boy Mank.

    Season 2, Episode 15 - Venom w/Grace Segers

Better late than never! After many digressions, we finally dive into the Marvel universe to discuss Venom! In which a crusading journalist falls in love with some alien parasite goo. Grace Segers and her cat join us to talk about Tom Hardy’s acting quirks, plane movies, and why one of the fundamental traits of a journalist is being a big giant loser.

Season 2, Episode 14 - The Great Muppet Caper

Season 2, Episode 14 - The Great Muppet Caper

It’s some real Gonzo journalism this week as we discuss the 1981 musical heist flick and vaguely newspaper-related comedy The Great Muppet Caper. Tara and Jacob talk about why it’s so disturbing to see the muppets’ legs, our love of old-timey musicals, and the astounding talents of Charles Grodin and Dame Diana Rigg. Plus, what would the muppets be up to today if they were still alive?

Season 2, Episode 13 - How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (w/Scaachi Koul)

Season 2, Episode 13 - How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (w/Scaachi Koul)

This week, the inimitable Scaachi Koul joins us to discuss the film that taught her you can just do weird things to people and someone will pay you to write about it. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a profoundly flawed but nevertheless charming magazine rom-com starring a shirtless Matthew McConaughey and pre-yoga pants Kate Hudson. It’s completely demented and it’s a perfect movie.

    Season 2, Episode 12 - Newsies

    Season 2, Episode 12 - Newsies

Headlines don't sell papes. Newsies sell papes! Cowboy Christian Bale organizes a brood of plucky orphans into a bonafide union in this not-great musical from the ’90s. Tara and Jacob discuss the magical world of Disney, the real-life newsboys’ strike of 1899 and, of course, gay subtext. Plus, it’s Robert Duvall as Joseph Pulitzer!

Box Office Bylines is a podcast about movies about journalism. Where does it say you gotta live and die here? Where does it say a guy can't catch a break? Why should you only take what you're given? Why should you spend your whole life livin'. Trapped where there ain't no future. Even at seventeen. Breakin' your back for someone else's sake. If the life don't seem to suit ya. How 'bout a change of scene? Far from the lousy headlines. And the deadlines in between. boxofficebylines@gmail.com. Are you there?

Season 2, Episode 11 - Sex and the City (w/Michal Stein)

I couldn’t help but wonder, is Sex and the City a journalism show? Michal Stein joins us to discuss the groundbreaking feminist-with-an-asterisk series and its problematic legacy. Plus, Tara on gay men writing women, dream editor Candice Bergen, and postulating what sexy hijinks the (three) gals will get up to in the dreaded revival.
