"The Fifteenth Green" by Margery Lawrence

"The Fifteenth Green" by Margery Lawrence

Invited to share his story at Saunderson’s Round Table, a golfer provides a terrifying account of an old fisherman, a vengeful curse, and the mystery of The Fifteenth Green…
This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “The Fifteenth Green” by Margery Lawrence (from “Nights of the Round Table”, first published 1926).

You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to a forthcoming episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7JYpOrSDoCfvPbjBn6DZGIXDlK-eOzpR).

CREATOR’S NOTE: My recordings contain a mixture of audio narration, sound effects, and music…because that’s what I like to make and listen to. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea or coffee, but luckily we exist in a world of almost limitless choice, so if it hurts your ears or makes you nauseous, feel free to move on to something else, no need to leave a comment. I try and do voices and accents to distinguish between characters as it can help the listener, but I’m not Meryl Streep, nor have I ever claimed to be. Wish I had her money though. I do a wide variety of mostly vintage (early 20th century) stories on this channel. Naturally, the stories reflect the attitudes and language of the time. They didn’t know any better. But they did dress smarter and look good in hats. Sometimes pet animals die in these stories (though not in this one). When it happens, try not to weep, just hold your own pet animal a little tighter (but not too tightly).

"The Wood of Living Trees" by G. Ranger Wormser

"The Wood of Living Trees" by G. Ranger Wormser

From the moment Manners is first introduced to a charismatic Russian named Andreyvich, he develops an intense distrust of the man. But why does he feel they have met before? And what is the dark secret of The Wood of Living Trees?

This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “The Wood of Living Trees” by G Ranger Wormser (first published 1918).
You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to a forthcoming episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7JYpOrSDoCfvPbjBn6DZGIXDlK-eOzpR).

CREATOR’S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that’s what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. If that’s not your thing, seek out other creators on YouTube. They will be delighted to make your acquaintance. I also do character voices to differentiate between characters. If this is likely to disturb you, again look elsewhere. The stories I read are very old and sometimes contain attitudes and language you might find upsetting. They didn’t know any better, just as you don’t know what future generations will find objectionable about the things you say and do. Keep that in mind and enjoy instead a fascinating glimpse into a time gone by.

"The Bowmen" / "Out of the Earth" by Arthur Machen

"The Bowmen" / "Out of the Earth" by Arthur Machen

In 1914 Arthur Machen published “The Bowmen”, a patriotic supernatural tale intended to boost the morale of British soldiers fighting in the trenches and those at home who had heard reports of the horrors of warfare. However, much to his consternation, Machen’s story was taken as fact by a public who desperately wanted to believe and spawned the legend of The Angels of Mons. His 1915 short story “Out of the Earth” deals with the aftermath of “The Bowmen” controversy, exploring the ways that myths and stories can take on a life of their own by examining some peculiar happenings along part of the Welsh coast.

This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “The Bowmen” by Arthur Machen (1914) and “Out of the Earth” by Arthur Machen (1915).

You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to a forthcoming episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem.

CREATOR’S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that’s what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. There are many narrators who don’t do this and they will be delighted to meet you. I try to do different voices just because I think it helps differentiate between characters when you’re listening. Apologies if I don’t nail every accent. You knew what I was going for, and at least I gave you a laugh. Apologies if I accidentally used a WW2 gun for my WW1 sound effects. Apologies if I said some of the Welsh things wrong. It’s hard, you know. The stories I read on this channel come from another time, many decades ago. If some of the ideas, beliefs, sentiments, and language upsets you, try and forgive them…as you will expect to be forgiven by the people judging you ten years from now.

    "Kecksies" by Marjorie Bowen

    "Kecksies" by Marjorie Bowen

Two debauched noblemen seek refuge in the cottage of Goody Boyle one stormy night. When they find out that her home is the last resting place of a mutual enemy – Richard Horne – and his corpse is in the next room, they decide to play a diabolical joke. But just who will have the last laugh in Marjorie Bowen’s classic tale of cruelty, revenge, and witchcraft.
This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “Keckies” by Marjorie Bowen (1925).
You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to the next episode (17) of The EnCrypted Postmortem (uploaded soon…when I’ve finished it!).
CREATOR’S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that’s what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. If it’s not your thing, please feel free to listen to the many other narrators who are voice-only. I’m sure they’ll be happy to meet you. I do accents and voices to help distinguish between characters, but please keep in mind that I’m not Michael Sheen or Meryl Streep, nor have I ever claimed to be. Sometimes when I voice a female character, I will raise the pitch of my voice. If this upsets you, I am sorry…but imagine how confusing it would be if all my female characters sounded like the baritones in a male voice choir. These are recorded by a rank amateur using substandard equipment in a room with appalling equipment. If this upsets you, please send money so I can buy better equipment and a new house. Finally, I try and pronounce all words correctly, but, like you, I am not a walking dictionary and encyclopedia. Think of my mistakes and idiosyncrasies as a charming reminder that you are listening to an actual human who has tried to imbue his narration with personality and drama…and not a soulless AI-generated voice.
EDITORIAL NOTE: I made a slight amend to the text because I believe there was a point in the original where it was unclear which character was speaking.
