Ben & Rob marvel at 'Ghostbusters: Answer The Call', the 2016 reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth. Set in a whole new universe where the original cast briefly appear in different roles but still shout fan service catchphrases, this film was unfairly reviled and bullied by a majority male audience on it's release and since. Does that mean we think the film is good? Well... no, but it's not because of the female cast.
The Ghosbusters franchise as a whole had been in development hell for decades; can we unravel the mystery of how this film came to be the fan-reaction disaster it so famously became? Ben & Rob close the curtain on their Charlie Chaplin with ‘Limelight’, his 1952 movie about love and regret that proved to be his last American film before his exile for suspected Communist sympathies. Billed as ‘Charles’ rather than ‘Charlie’, Chaplin paints a poignantly tragic tale of a fading star mentoring an up and coming dancer and reflects on his life in what is no doubt the most personal film he ever made. Also starring Clare Bloom and featuring so-called rival Buster Keaton, ‘Limelight’ was a financial success despite being mostly banned in the US due to Chaplin’s exile, marking a complex end to his career in the industry he had such a hand in shaping.
But beneath the complex romance of the two leads is there a deeper, and far sadder, reflection of Chaplin’s past? Why did the United States choose to ban a man who was arguably one of the jewels in their cultural crown? How comfortably can we watch the works of a man who had not one, but four far-too-young wives in his life? However, when Dana and her baby have yet another terrifying encounter with the paranormal, it is up to Peter Venkman and his fearless team of supernatural crime fighters to step up and save the day. But is ‘Ghostbusters’ just a franchise that refuses to sequel well? Why does this film suffer so much among fan opinion compared to the original 1984 classic? And is Vigo The Carpathian just a terrible villain?!
