To avoid friendship with someone because of their sex is like choosing not to befriend someone because of their age or race.
Instead, your choice in friends should have to do with their character and personality. Is this someone with whom you can connect and vibe? As well as, and most important, what is the nature of their heart? Compelling reasons to befriend someone of the opposite sex:
This person can offer alternate viewpoints on various life situations that you might not receive from the same sex, offering a more diverse view of things.
Befriending someone of the opposite sex teaches you to expand your ideas of who a good friend can be. A good friend can be anyone. Regardless of age, religion, ethnicity, or sex. Again, it’s about who they are on the inside .
Opposite sex friendships offer differing benefits than those of the same sex. Such as, I have heard men say of their female friends, that they feel able to talk more openly about their feelings, as opposed to with many of their male friends.
Having diverse friendships enriches our lives. It makes our social life more interesting, open, and inspiring.
One of my biggest points though: In our society, there is an unfortunate connotation that any relations between a man and a woman must always turn romantic and/or sexual. Of course, this can and does happen, but this is also an insulting and absurd statement to both sexes. Implying that men are incapable of care or respect, or of controlling any kind of sexual urges. And it’s insulting to women in implying that men’s interest in us is solely connected to their sexual desires. That our worth to them cannot extend beyond this. Men and women are very capable of other options, in terms of our relations with people of the opposite sex.
Further, someone’s friendship can be far more valuable to us over the long term of our life, as opposed to dating them for a temporary time as a romantic partner.
Because of this connotation that things are always expected to turn romantic between men and women, I believe there is a sort of fear, nervousness, caution, and mistrust that often comes with these potential friendships. As a result, many people tend to avoid them altogether because “opposite sex friendship is impossible” and “it can never work.”
Yes, it can. Between two emotionally mature individuals, as well as two people who genuinely like, respect, and care for one another. Both of whom have good boundaries and great inner character.
This usual avoidance of these friendships can and does result in loss. Loss of opportunity for wonderful connections, for both men and women alike. Friendships that may have offered us life changing perspectives, as well as added much beauty and richness to our life.
There are hardly any great role models in our media for what a terrific and healthy platonic friendship can be between a man and a woman. This is a problem. It causes a lot of people to avoid befriending anyone of the opposite sex, and thus, they miss out on what could have been something significant and worthwhile.
We tend to treat romantic relationships between women and men as the utmost, pinnacle of all relational types. This is a grossly inaccurate and dismissive way of considering all other types of connections between people. Many of which are just as emotionally deep, worthwhile, enriching, and just as valuable as romances.
Opposite gender friendship is one of them.
