CFS: Controversial Saturday Morning Cartoons Episode Ten – Tales From The Cryptkeeper!

The animated hosts of the Cult Film Showdown

explore the strangest time in human history

    - the late 20th century.

Episode 10: "Tales from the Cryptkeeper"

The popular cult horror comic books from

the 1950s are adapted in this cartoon

    anthology series.

Tales from the Cryptkeeper is an animated

    horror children's television series made

by Canadian studio Nelvana. The series was

broadcast on ABC in the United States,

and on ITV in the United Kingdom.

It is based on the 1950s EC Comics series

Tales from the Crypt and the live action

television series of the same name,

    which aired concurrently on HBO.

Intended for children, Tales from the

    Cryptkeeper is significantly milder than

    its live-action counterpart, and all

blood, gore, profanity and sexual content

are completely removed to be more appropriate

for the target audience. Most episodes take

place within the fictional city of

    Gravenhurst, California.

The series details the Cryptkeeper telling more

kid-friendly horror stories to the viewers,

    each with a teachable lesson.

The second season has the Cryptkeeper at

constant odds with rivals, and fellow EC

    Comics horror hosts, the Vault-Keeper

and the Old Witch, who continually try

to steal the show from him as they didn't

have one of their own, only to have their

plans backfire. The Cryptkeeper can be

found in different locales than his mansion,

as he tries to elude his foes.

The third and final season aired in 1999.

Unlike the first two seasons, it, under

New Tales from the Cryptkeeper, aired on

Teletoon in Canada and on CBS in the

United States. This season sees the

Cryptkeeper taking a more active role,

usually by setting up situations to

teach frightening lessons to kids with

    severe character flaws.

    Episode 9 "Kid 'n' Play"

Centers on hip-hop duo Kid 'n Play. Stresses

    positive role models, teaching children

cooperation and staying out of trouble.

Kid 'n Play is a 1990 animated cartoon

series based on the real-life hip hop duo

Kid 'n Play. It ran for one season on NBC

    from September 8 to December 8, 1990.

On the show, Kid 'n Play were portrayed

as teenagers, along with their friend Jazzy,

their producer Hurbie and their DJ Wiz,

but their recording careers remained the

same as in real life, as did their character

traits. Production was by Marvel Productions

    and Saban Entertainment.

The real Kid 'n Play appeared in live-action

wraparounds of the cartoons, but voice actors

took over for the animated versions of the duo.

The show stressed positive role models,

teaching children how to get along with each

other and stay out of trouble. Akin to the

House Party films, Play was the less responsible

member of the duo, cooking up get rich quick

schemes, while Kid, the more responsible member,

would usually be made to clean up messes.

Oftentimes the issue would be resolved by the

characters' girlfriends, or sometimes by an

elderly jazz musician who wore a blue beret

and was aptly named "Old Blue".

Also along the crew is Kid's Mohawk pet dog Hairy.

The lessons ranged from serious to lighter fare.

One of the "less serious" episodes dealt with

Kid's father under the impression hip hop is

bad and Kid not having the means to put it in

a positive light. Old Blue offers to help by

sending Kid on a trip back in time to the era

of jazz and 1920s speakeasies to help better

    understand its roots.

CFS: Controversial Saturday Morning Cartoons Episode Eight – Pryor’s Place!

The animated hosts of the Cult Film Showdown

explore the strangest time in human history -

the late 20th century. A time when there

could be only one, unless you needed a sequel!

Or a TV series. Or an Animated Series.

Ok, there could be only a few dozen or so.

    Episode 8 "Pryor's Place"

    Richard Pryor tells educational stories

of his youth at a special urban neighborhood.

    In the first episode,

Richie (ostensibly Pryor as a child) is

    challenged to an afterschool showdown

    by Meatrack, the neighborhood bully.

Despite a reputation for profanity from

    Richard Pryor, Pryor's Place was

aimed at children. Like Sesame Street,

Pryor's Place featured a cast of

puppets hanging out and having fun in a

    friendly inner-city environment,

    along with several children and

    characters portrayed by Pryor himself.

The theme song was performed by Ray Parker Jr.,

of Ghostbusters fame, who also appeared in

the show's opening credits. 13 episodes of

Pryor's Place were broadcast on Saturdays

on CBS from September 15 to December 8, 1984.
