Today on The Nersey Guide to Ethical Hating, we’ve got Luke O’Neil, the legendary proprietor of the Welcome to Hell World newsletter, on the pod. We recorded this a few months ago, and we’ve been waiting for the exact right time to drop it. A lot of the episode deals with the ongoing genocide in Gaza, which has only become more dire on the ground — and contentious in America — in the time since we had Luke on. But Luke is one of the most passionate and astute observers of politics around, and he helps us navigate the situation with the appropriate amount of righteous rage — directed at both the fact that such atrocities are happening to innocent people, as well as at the complete and utter intellectual dishonesty of the politicians who enable this to happen. Listen to this episode and then go protest somewhere.
FYI, this episode is mostly serious (probably not surprising given the subject matter), but we also discuss sports haterdom, a big pile of snow in Boston that was definitely a hater, and also Luke’s most recent book, A Creature Wanting Form, which you can buy from OR Books.

E24: Does J. Cole Suck Ass? A Nersey Debate

E24: Does J. Cole Suck Ass? A Nersey Debate

trey took the week off, so drew and slava decided to record a formal, timed debate on a topic thats been pondered since time immemorial: does j cole suck, or does j cole not suck. slava got to take the position of “j cole obviously sucks cmon dude,” while drew was forced to defend j cole because he is from north carolina and j cole is too. our producer steel tipped dove played the role of moderator.
WHO WILL WIN THIS HEATED BATTLE IN THE TIMELESS ART OF DEBATE???? will it be slava, who had the advantage of taking the position that most people who listen to this podcast probably agree with? or will it be drew, who loves being a contrarian and is in no way above baiting slava into breaking the rules of the debate? there is only one way to know, and that is by listening to this episode of nersey.

ruby justice thelot is the smartest person we know. buy his book a cyberarcheology of checkpoints, which is about using the internet to find community in ways that capital does not intend (specifically in the comments section of a youtube video containing the soundtrack of donkey kong country 2), or else.
he hopped on the pod to talk about the positives and negatives of fan culture, the quasi-lacanian nature of the stan-to-idol relationship, which fanbases are the most powerful in their haterdom, the political power of the furry community, how a new roman emperor’s first move was to eliminate all his haters, and the time that ruby was flown out by ysl to just hang out at their fashion show in paris.
ruby’s so ridiculously good at being on podcasts that at one point trey announced that nersey now belongs to him.

for this edition of The Nersey Guide to Ethical Hating, we got our homie, the rapper/racontour/rapscallion fatboi sharif, on the pod to talk about rap beefs. though sharif has a lot of opinions on both rapping and beefing, he’s not really into taking shots on wax: “i’d rather just come to your show and beat you up,” he says.
in case you’ve been living under a rock, fatboi sharif is one of the brightest, realest, and most avant-garde stars in underground hip-hop, and he just so happens to work closely with our producer steel tipped dove — check their joint album decay out asap if you’re unfamiliar.
other topics we touch on in this episode include the cartoonish villainy of diddy, stanley kubrick movies and their corresponding conspiracy theories, and drew being insanely bad at dancing. also, slava and sharif have a freestyle battle at the end.

drew had covid when we recorded so slava, trey, and steel tipped dove boldly forged ahead to talk about the issues of the day. namely: cryptocoins being up, the world being in mourning because of the death of the dragon ball z guy, and the department of defense having a stage at sxsw. trey and slava ended up blocking each other on twitter as a bit, joe offered a grand theory of how to dj when planet earth is playing at a bar, and then drew came on at some point towards the end to talk about how he definitely didn’t get covid at the big shoegaze festival in philly. this one is extremely a subscriber only episode and should quite frankly be listened to by no one.
also if drew had been there for the discussion about sxsw he would have told the following story:
at sxsw in like 2014, this guy who was throwing a big party at a convention center with a bowling alley was like “hey you should meet this guy i manage, he’s an r&b singer and a rapper and i think he’s gonna be big one day maybe.” he then grabbed the guy, introduced us, and then immediately walked away to do other stuff. the r&b singer/rapper and i started chatting and ended up getting along and hanging out for like four hours backstage at this big party thing. at one point some video interview person came up to the r&b singer/rapper and was like “hey can i interview you” and the r&b singer/rapper was like “yeah for sure but also you gotta meet my new protege, troy abs. he’s bringing real new york rap back through physical fitness” and pulls me into the camera frame with him. so he and i spend ten minutes doing this bit about how i’m a rapper and all my songs are about proper pull-up technique or whatever and the camera person just keeps rolling, i can only assume they knew we were joking but i’ve never seen the footage and it probably never made it to youtube so really i have no idea. later, i told slava about this experience and he was like “dude you shouldn’t f**k with that guy, he’s got a kinda bad reputation around toronto” so i stopped being his friend.
this was fortuitous, it turns out, because the r&b singer/rapper in question was tory lanez. the end.
anyways, nersey is hosted by trey smith, drew millard, and slava p. we are produced by steel tipped dove and our music is by craig s. jenkins.

what does it mean to be a hater, but in an ethical way? what if there were an, uhhhhh, ethics,,,, of being a hater? since we decided to make a whole ass series themed around (once again) being an ethical hater, we decided we needed to define our terms here. and who better to help us do that than brandy jensen, the absolute legend and h8r extraordinaire who is now technically a professional advice-giver. there was some yelling and also some deep thinking and occasionally both at the same time. together, we tackle thrilling questions such as:
    * what counts as “being a hater,” and when is it warranted?
    * is there a difference between being a hater and talking s**t?
    * is haterdom ever a result of how we feel about ourselves? who was the greatest literary hater?
    * who do we, personally, hate? and relatedly, will any of us suffer either professional or personal consequences as a result of things we said on this podcast?
for the answers to all these questions and more, put the sounds of this podcast into your ears.
