    Listener Feedback- EMDR

    Listener Feedback- EMDR

In this week's episode, I share some listener feedback. I was simply wowed at  the folks who reached out to me to share their trauma experiences. I was equally amazed how certain therapies, including EMDR really helped them.

Some of the listeners I spoke to talked about the gravity of their trauma such as: abuse, molestation, death, addiction, racial trauma and many other forms of trauma. I took solace in the fact that my experience and willingness to share about my trauma normalized  experience for others.

As this is a financial podcast, I would like to bring the aspect of finance full circle.  A certification I obtained (Certified Financial Transitionist®-CeFT®) a  few years ago has really allowed me to hone my personal and professional experience for that of my clients.  In case you are not familiar with CeFT®.  A Certified Financial Transitionist® is trained to help clients through major life events and the financial transitions that accompany them.  Basically, I am trained to incorporate the emotional side of money with the technical side and guide clients accordingly.  Often times emotions conflict with very literal functions of money.

    Hope you enjoy the episode.

    Cheers and be well!

Emotional Effects of Racism and Discrimination

Emotional Effects of Racism and Discrimination

Greetings and welcome to episode 4 of Season 6-Racism and Discrimination

I decided to reboot a previous episode on the subject.  As I have gotten older, and maybe wiser, I understand the traumatic effects of dealing with years of unsolicited biases due to the color of my skin.

In this episode, I describe some horrible experiences I have had with racism and discrimination.  These experiences have been  both emotional and physically exhausting.  The trauma is constant as situations continue to manifest themselves.  I also realize my emotions heighten now that my sons have experienced some of the same slights I have faced.

I am gracious to have the right support systems in place to help me through many of these experiences.

As  this is a podcast with a foundation of finance, I will also talk about the financial impacts of racism and discrimination.

As an ironic twist of fate, I have been recognized and requested  as a speaker on the subject of racism and discrimination.

    Trauma Therapy-EMDR

    Trauma Therapy-EMDR

In today's episode I want to talk about trauma therapy.  Specifically, one that I have experienced called EMDR.  EMDR is short for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing.
Let me describe EMDR in layman’s terms.  Imagine  walking past a grassy area and have no emotional response.  Imagine, I walk by that same grassy area and my heart begins to race, I get anxious, I start to get very nervous, my mind starts racing and I start sweating.  To further extend this example -  imagine I was traumatized in a grassy area, assaulted, overt act of racism, accident, act of war, catastrophe, death, etc.  Now you can begin to understand why I (anyone) would be triggered by walking by a grassy area.

The effects of trauma evoke an uncontrolled emotional response unless there is a system in which to process those memories safely, with an outside perspective and desensitized.

I am not a therapist and cannot recommend any type of therapy.  I can tell you about my experience and how I have been enriched.  I can tell you that seeking a professional helps for any traumatic life experience.

Here is the link mentioned in the podcast  Cleveland Clinic EMDR

I am an an open book at this juncture and realize that I open the door to talk about the things that may be holding others back from progressing.
I hope you enjoy this episode.

    Cheers!!
