SMM 84: A Resource To Help You Learn How You Hear Jesus Darla Trendler

SMM 84: A Resource To Help You Learn How You Hear Jesus Darla Trendler

Episode 84 is a solo episode with an announcement, thoughts about President Nelson’s invitation to ponder how you hear Jesus and a resource to help you act on the invitation.
Announcement: Be Part of a Listener Call-in Show At the beginning of this episode I shared that I am doing another listener call-in show. I’m inviting YOU to call in and share your response to the question: How have you been blessed by following any of the invitations extended by President Nelson since the last general conference?
You can listen to the episode for more details but here are the steps to follow to leave your response to be included on an upcoming episode:
Call ‪(480) 525-7145‬. Call anytime. It doesn’t ring to my phone so you won’t be waking me up or anything. Leave a message sharing the blessings you have received from following President Nelson’s invitations at the last general conference. Keep your answer to less than 3 minutes. Call and record your answer by Friday, March 27, 2020. President Nelson’s Invitation This episode is my way of giving you a resource to help you act on the invitation from President Nelson to “…think deeply and often about this key question: How do you hear Him?”
A Resource To Help You Understand How You Hear Jesus As part of this episode, I’m re-aring episode 44, which was the third part of a five part series I aired last year about how to be more spiritually minded.
All of the episodes in the series are a great resource to help you think about how you #HearHim but the third part, which I am re-airing here, shares an exercise you can do to help you understand how you feel the spirit and hear the Savior in your life.
The resource found in a free printable is adapted from an exercise I found in the Preach My Gospel manual for missionaries.
The printable includes 28 different ways you might feel the spirit. Each way has scriptures you can look up. After reading the scriptures, you can ponder and write how you have felt God guiding you in this way.
It’s OK if you leave some of the boxes blank. You are an individual and God communicates with you in your own unique way. You may not feel God in all 28 ways listed and that is totally OK.
In the episode, I share some of my experiences and how I have learned to use God as a guide in my life.
I also share experiences of two previous podcast guests. You’ll hear a short clip of episode 10 with Ally Hayward and another clip of episode 14 with Michelle Garfield.
I hope the exercise on the printable and hearing other people’s experiences will give you hope and help you realize you can figure out for yourself how you hear Jesus in your life.

SMM 083: How to Give Up Overwhelm Value Connection in Motherhood Kristen Goodman

SMM 083: How to Give Up Overwhelm Value Connection in Motherhood Kristen Goodman

Episode 83 is an interview with Kristen Goodman, a mom to four daughters as well as a life coach. Kristen shares how to deal with overwhelm and perfectionism, value connection over control and seek intention to see God’s guidance in motherhood.
Give Up Overwhelm + Perfectionism Kristen shares her early experiences in motherhood with everything she thought she “should” be doing.
She talks about an epiphany where she realized the feelings of overwhelm weren’t from the Spirit.
We discuss how overwhelm and perfectionism are tools Satan uses to target mothers.
Kristen also shares how prayer, therapy and finding life coaching helped her to realize she wasn’t responsible for others’ thoughts and feelings.
She reveals how she discovered she could only be responsible for her own thoughts and feelings and recognized that motherhood was a choice. Both of these things helped her let go of overwhelm and perfectionism.
Connection over Control Kristen discusses how once she learned she wasn’t responsible for others’ feelings, she could also let go of trying to control her kids.
She shares how the result of letting go of control also meant she was letting go of conflict.
We talk about the balance of pushing your kids versus allowing them to make their own decisions.
Ultimately, Kristen shared why you have to go with the Spirit and know your child. She shared the belief you are the mom to your kids for a reason and you have to trust yourself.
Through her own journey, Kristen talks about how she has learned to truly connect with her daughters. She offers advice to any parenting wanting to connect and build a better relationship with their child.
Using Intention to See God’s Guidance Kristen’s overall message is that you can see the hand of God in your life every single day. She shares how being intentional is key to seeing your heavenly parents as your partners in motherhood.
Kristen’s Quotes “I knew my feelings I was having and being overwhelmed weren’t coming from the spirit, and that’s not the way Heavenly Father wanted me to feel.” And that ultimately led me to the thought that was creating all of my overwhelm, which was that I could control, and I was responsible for my kids and how they felt and how they succeeded. I felt like I could control and be responsible for them in that way, which wasn’t true. “You can’t control your kids, especially as they get older, which is why I love talking to parents of teenagers. I really feel like that is a hard stage of life where you have to let them figure things out. And I’m so glad that I don’t feel like I need to have that control over them anymore because it really creates such a conflict.” “Creating that space where I feel connected to them has just really changed the way I parent because I really want to keep that relationship.” “I really feel like I intentionally look at the things going on around me in my life and I can find things every single day where my heavenly parents are leading me in the direction that I need to go or helping me out with one thing or another every single day because I’m looking for it.” Episode Links Book Kristen Mentioned: How to Talk So Your Kids Will Listen and Listen So Your Kids Will Talkby Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish

SMM 082: How to Use Christ's Example to be an Advocate for Your Child || Jaime Wilkins

SMM 082: How to Use Christ's Example to be an Advocate for Your Child || Jaime Wilkins

Hear how podcaster and mom, Jaime Wilkins, learned to use Christ’s example to be an advocate for her daughter after she was diagnosed with autism.
Episode Summary In episode 82, Jaime Wilkins shares how she discovered at a young age that her life’s mission would be to help people.
She talks about the details of how her daughter was diagnosed with Autism. Jaime shares an experience she had with the school district where she said no to what experts were telling her was best for her daughter. She followed the Spirit and through personal revelation knew what was best for her child.
Jaime discusses how she hired an advocate to help her in the process of getting the best outcome for her daughter. She shares how she learned the importance of being the expert, advocate and voice for her child.
You will also hear Jaime’s tips on what you can do when you feel the need to advocate for your child. Jaime said that she relied on prayer, following the Spirit, finding resources and information, documenting and asking others for help.
Jaime and I also discuss the things this experience taught her about how Christ is our advocate with the Father. She shares a scripture found in D&C 45:3-5 and how these words helped her understand more fully the Savior’s role as an advocate.
We also discuss what Jaime has learned about labeling her children. She shares how her daughter receiving the label of “autism” has helped her get resources but she also knows her child is much more than that label. She makes the connection that if you want to be an advocate for your child you have to look beyond the label. You can look to our Heavenly Father who never labels His children.
In the end, Jaime shares how her heavenly parents have been the ultimate example of showing an increase of love to her children.
Jaime’s Quotes “We’re entitled to revelation for her and what’s best for her.” And, I think even as women there is the kind of like people pleasing and I wanted to be easy and accommodating and yeah, go with the flow. But this was not right. “So yeah, just giving her a voice is so important because kids don’t get a voice at the table in the classroom at the planning meetings…. And so giving that kid a voice, is so important.” “And so what this means in this instance is that he is our Savior. The advocate means the same thing as our Savior. He is saying to Heavenly Father, look, I have suffered the atonement for these people. For Darla, for Jamie, for the Spiritually Minded Mom listener and please allow them back into our presence because I have suffered the atonement.” “She is who she is regardless of any label put upon her.” Episode Links Doctrine and Covenants 45:3-5

SMM 81: How to View Your Weaknesses in a Positive Light || Darla Trendler

SMM 81: How to View Your Weaknesses in a Positive Light || Darla Trendler

Episode 81 is a follow-up from episode 80’s discussion on how a mother’s weakness can bless her children. Listen to hear my personal insights gathered from personal experiences, scriptures and talks about how to view your weaknesses in a positive light.
Episode Summary In my last episode, I aired an interview with Kristen Walker Smith. Kristen shared how our weaknesses as mothers can actually bless our children.
I loved Kristen’s thoughts on weakness, so much so, that I decided to do some personal study on the topic of weakness.
In this episode, I share a few stories from my own life about seeing weaknesses in a positive light.
You’ll hear what happened when I polled my own kids about what they thought my weaknesses are. My 18-year-old son’s comments totally surprised me!
I talk about some weak spots in parenting when my kids were little and how my husband and I course corrected.
I also share viewing weakness in a positive light from the perspective of being a daughter.
The scriptures are full of examples of people who learned that weakness is a positive thing. I share scriptures that illustrate how God uses weakness for our benefit.
I found a talk and an article that were very enlightening to me. You’ll hear about a talk I read by Neal A. Maxwell (link below) that helped to remind me that having weakness is totally normal.
I also share an Ensign article that sheds light on how weakness is not a sin and actually draws us closer to God (link below).
Through my interview with Kristen and my study of weakness I have learned that I can view weakness in a positive light. Weakness has a purpose and through the Savior’s grace our weaknesses become strengths.

SMM 080: Why Your Weaknesses are Blessing Your Children || Kristen Walker Smith - 21820 1.13 PM

Listen to episode 80 to hear how my guest, Kristen Walker Smith, has learned to think of weakness as a blessing as she has dealt with OCD and motherhood at the same time.
Episode Summary Kristen experienced a sudden onset of OCD when she got pregnant with her first child. However, it wasn’t until two and a half years later, when her mom asked her about her excessive hand washing, that Kristen was officially diagnosed.
In the episode, Kristen shares how she navigated OCD and motherhood at the same time.
She talks about how she saw God showing up. In addition, she discusses how God didn’t fill in all the gaps but covered the most essential things.
Kristen says she wasn’t very open with others about her struggles. She shares how others saw her needs and helped and supported her even though she wasn’t opening up.
One of the biggest things Kristen has learned from her struggles is how to reframe her thoughts about weakness. Kristen shares how she came to understand that her weaknesses were giving her children exactly what they needed.
Kristen also shares advice for anyone struggling with a weakness (hello, that’s all of us!) to let others in and to list the blessings that weakness is bringing into your life.
Overall, Kristen shares her belief that you can’t have fear and faith at the same time. She chooses faith. Kristen shares her witness of how God helps us through our weaknesses.
Kristen’s Quotes “I was so mad, but I took time to pray about it and I realized, you know what, God put me on the earth at this time when there is medication for what I’m dealing with. Why would I refuse that blessing that he’s put on this earth. And so the combination of a very good therapist and medication has made all the difference and that’s when things really switched.” “My weaknesses were blessing them to create strengths of their own through Christ. Christ’s strength was resting on them wherever my weaknesses were.” “It is impossible for gratitude and fear to live in the same space and I found that when times would get truly overwhelming, I just had to go back to that list and remember God is blessing me in this trial right now.” “And so even though so much of my motherhood fell to the wayside, God blessed me with the ability to do what was absolutely eternally vital.” Episode Links OCD Workbook 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 Get Kristen’s FREE scripture study Come Follow Me kits Listen to Related Episodes SMM 021: Chasing Your Dreams + Turning to God in Post-Partum Depression || Amanda Anderson
