Feature Story | Celebrating Chinese New Year! (4:30)

What is the animal for the Chinese New Year 2019?
This year marks the Year of the Pig, which is the 12th of all zodiac animals.

Your own zodiac year is considered your unluckiest year. In Chinese culture, embracing red is considered a weapon of defense against misfortune. Chinese families tend to fill their houses with red decorations.

The Western calendar, formally known as the Gregorian calendar, is a solar calendar. It counts the time it takes for the Earth to go around the Sun once a year. Each month has the same number of days every year, except during leap years.
The Chinese lunar calendar is, despite its name, a lunisolar calendar. It counts the length of time it takes for the moon to go around the Earth as a month, while still counting the time it takes for the Earth to go around the Sun as one year. The outcome is the Chinese lunar calendar having a variable amount of days every year, sometimes even including an extra month!
So now you understand why traditional Chinese holidays like Chinese New Year, Lantern Festival, and, of course, Moon Festival seem to fall on different days every year on the Western calendar.

A great show to see on traditional Chinese culture is called Shen Yun through music and dance!

Most of us know Benjamin Franklin as being one of our U.S. Founding Fathers. But did you know how extremely talented and diverse his skills were? He was an author and printer, scientist, diplomat, and statesman and most importantly he seemed to have a big heart in wanting to help those around him. He was an incredibly observant person and knowledgeable through his own self-study and cultivation of his character!!

Temperance (do not overindulge with food or drink)
    Silence (no idle chit chat)
    Order (be organized)
Resolution (don’t flake out on commitments)
    Frugality (do not waste)
    Industry (be productive)
Sincerity (be truthful in your actions and deeds)
Justice ( do not seek revenge)
    Moderations (never go to extremes)
Cleaniless ( keep a clean home and appearance)
Tranquility ( be calm/ avoid drama)
Chasity (stay committed to your marriage/ no cheating)

Take Me Home: 50th Anniversary of Red Skelton’s Pledge of Allegiance (5:55)
Today we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Red Skelton’s Pledge of Allegiance one of the most influential moments in American history. This was a presentation that was aired live. Red Skelton was a comedian/actor/artist from a small town in Indiana which isn’t too far from where we are. He paved the way for comedians like Carol Burnett’s who is a winner of the lifetime achievement award in television at the 2019 Golden Globes, and even Johnny Carson, that is celebrating a milestone!

His pledge started with a letter that he wrote to his wife. He formed a habit of writing letters daily to his wife about how much he loved her and things happening during his day which you can buy in a book today but this one is significant. Here is Anne Pratt director of Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy and President of Red Skelton Foundation.

    Anne about artifacts:
There was a response of 400,000 fan letters that he wrote back with a copy of the Pledge all out of his own pocket.  They are going to be celebrating by having children say the pledge of allegiance at the museum and there will be a surprise celebrity guest recording that will be aired on their website.
And at the museum from now until Sept you can go see these artifacts, like the Pledge of Allegiance on a Columbia Record!
    and many awards…
So, he was a very special man, a very funny man w/ a big heart for children and America- worth mentioning here on Take Me Home!
Don’t forget to subscribe and hit the like to hear more about him as we will also publish an interview with his wife Lothian soon here about his life at home and career- and most of all his heart for audience members
