    Rolling Thunder and Dabney Coleman

    Rolling Thunder and Dabney Coleman

He was the dad you wished you didn’t have and maybe, just maybe, the dad you wish you did have. We’re talking about the late ‘Anchor Actor’ Dabney Coleman in this Bonus Episode of TFT.

Along the way, we also play TUBI or Not TUBI, featuring what might be the most anti-TFT film ever, the 1977 semi-exploitation cult classic partially penned by Paul Schrader: Rolling Thunder, starring a near-implacable William Devane. Other bits of business in the episode include: the spareness of Tommy Lee Jones, Dionne Warwick, the Myth of Redemptive Violence and the 1986 TV movie The Return of Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer. Enjoy.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Does compassion and empathy win the day in this new Apes picture? Gareth and Jett discuss in detail and, just like the old days, vehemently agree to disagree, (or do they?), about the merits of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Along the way the get into all the previous Ape movies, touch on Karl Malden's performance in disaster flick Meteor, have questions about Danny Boyle's Sunshine and fondly recall the Kevin Costner starring Waterworld. Enjoy.

Roger Corman - Mourning a Giant

Roger Corman - Mourning a Giant

Martin Scorsese said of Roger Corman’s films, “they weren’t encumbered with having to deal with art.” There’s a freedom in that The Film Talk thinks. In this appreciation of the great, prolific director and producer Roger Corman Jett and Gareth touch on his astonishing legacy, the one shirt John Sayles appears to have, a very special Laurie Anderson lyric, the merits of James Cameron’s True Lies and much more. Corman will be missed by many, (Jett hasn’t cried at the death of someone he didn’t know more), yet he exists still, in his work and in the work of those he fostered.

    Challengers

    Challengers

Can you win without defeating someone? Gareth and Jett get into it with Luca Guadagnino's new new action, (and love), packed tennis picture Challengers. Along the way they delve into James Cameron's The Abyss, sing the praises of Hovis Bread commercials, recommend Ridley Scott's The Duelists and Walter Hill's Charles Bronson-starring Hard Times and pull the curtain back a little into their conceptions of what love really means.

[BONUS] Seven Days in May - Tubi or Not Tubi?

[BONUS] Seven Days in May - Tubi or Not Tubi?

Well this was quite the episode, perhaps being behind a ‘paywall’ allows us to be a bit looser, a bit opener? Maybe that’s just a way of saying we free-associated like mad in this very “relaxed” Bonus Episode in which a new segment is unveiled: Tubi or Not Tubi?

You see, we have this “free ad-supported television” service called Tubi in the U.S. of America, which has a fantastic selection of classic films, but let’s be honest, they’re not all gold. In ’Tubi or Not Tubi” Jett investigates whether a film on Tubi is really worth your time. For this inaugural segment Jett watches the classic John Frankenheimer directed, Rod Serling penned, political thriller Seven Days in May, starring Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster - both at the height of their powers.

Along the way Gareth recommends new documentaries Steve! and It’s Only Life after all, we get into the strangeness of another political thriller with Burt Lancaster, Twilight’s Last Gleaming, ruminate on the hamminess of Joe Don Baker, wonder what could have been if Lawrence Olivier was in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and so much more. Hope ya like it.

    Civil War

    Civil War

Can we experience our experiences without taking photographs of them? This is one of the many questions asked in Jett and Gareth’s look at the brilliant, picaresque horror film from Alex Garland: Civil War. Along the way they relate the movie to such work as Andor, Cold Mountain, Salvador and even After Earth, and decide we all need an avalanche of kindness in the world. French philosopher René Girard is in the mix as well, along with thoughts on the career of Anthony Perkins. Also we spoil the end of The Godfather Part III. #GentleJesse
