When you are a Zebra and The Medical System isn't Designed to Help You with Your Disease -Nicole Allard (Part 1)

Do you feel like a Zebra when the world… particularly the medical system… is looking for Horses?

Nicole has a rare disease of Chronic Hiccups. Something she has lived with, now MOSTLY manages, and worked for over 15 years to try to get help to diagnose and control. She was often brushed off as it being “In her head” or just trying to get attention.

With little help from our medical system she found her way to self managing and controlling her chronic hiccups.

A three year food study on herself lead her to discover the 6 foods that trigger her symptoms.

I’m honored to have her share her story with us!

The background? Here her tell her story at the Montihttp://themonti.org/stories/the-monti-video-series-nicole-allard

In LATE honor of Rare Disease Day. (Rare disease Day, happens on the LAST day of February… clover!)

What did we talk about?– What makes a disease “rare”– Her fascinating journey and experiences with doctors and hospitalizations while looking for answers.– The looks, teasing and painful words from strangers and friends… the effects.– A self created food journey that gave her the keys, eliminating six foods, to calming her system, ditching pain, acne and gained her energy like she never knew she could have.

Leadership Styles and How They Can Effect Your Health - Dawn Johnson With On The Rise Development

“Leadership is a privilege, Not a destination” Says our guest, Dawn Johnson.

This Mindset… wrap your head around what that can mean and.. .for many of us… this idea is a very different picture than, too often, what we experience. She starts from the belief that…“Every employee deserves a great leader Every leader deserves a great start!”

Dawn asks all the right questions when it comes to leadership. I think you will be listening to her saying “YES, YES, YES”… be you employee or leader!!

Dawn, a Learning and Development Professional, liked her work so much she started her own company! She walks us through a inspiring and hopeful vision of what leadership is, or can aspire to be. Mistakes NOT to make. The tone set by our leader and how we experience our work environment…. yes, even IF you are working from home… effects our daily well-being and health…. especially if issues go on too long. What can we do? Dawn has some great insight!

What did we talk about?“Leader.”.. what does it mean to be a leader? How has it changed over time and what does it look like now? What qualities make a good… a GREAT leader?

Stressed leaders create stressed employeesPitfalls leaders might experiences if they haven’t been prepared for the challenges that come with the responsibility. Good leaders need quality support and feedback to be great!Introverts…. Yes, you! Dawn shares what qualities introverts might have that make them especially great leaders.

Who gets promoted to leadership. Are they being rewarded for a different job done well? Do they even WANT to be a leader?

Our culture, leadership, how it is rewarded… and sometimes seen as a destination… seen as the definition and proof of success.

Feedback… early and often. What help the Pandemic may offer employees as well as leaders?

Work/life balance… HA! HA! HA!Smart phones, emails at 10pm and blurring the boundaries.

Unlimited vacation time… wait, WHAT DID YOU SAY??

Gaelynn Lea - Her Music - Performing, Disability Advocacy - Ideas to Effective Progress

Gaelynn Lea - Her Music - Performing, Disability Advocacy - Ideas to Effective Progress

Gaelynn Lea, Violinist, song writer and disability rights advocate. Winner of the 2016 Tiny Desk Concert on NPR

From her bio…Before the Coronavirus hit, she had toured in 45 states and 9 countries, captivating audiences around the world with her unique mix of haunting original songs and traditional fiddle tunes. Gaelynn Lea has appeared in several major festivals, including SXSW, Winnipeg Folk Festival, and Reykjavik Arts Festival. She’s also opened for well-known bands such as Wilco, The Decemberists, LOW, The Jayhawks, and even the industrial rock supergroup Pigface. Gaelynn Lea has shared her perspective as a disabled touring artist on PBS NewsHour, The Moth Radio Hour, The Science of Happiness Podcast, and through two widely-viewed TEDx Talks. Needless to say, Gaelynn Lea was certainly a songstress on the go!

She has weekly concerts Sunday at 2pm Central Time. And Quarantine Concerts archived from past shows. Links below

WHAT DID WE TALK ABOUT?2020… it has been a year of change and “thinking outside the box” For Gaelynn. She has been “locking down and making music”!

Zoom concerts have allowed for people who may not always be able to take part due to being in a different geographic location… It has also made more events accessible for those with challenges due to disability… even things like chronic pain or having little kids at home.

Not to mention allowing lessor known artists to have a bigger reach.

What she wishes people would know or consider when thinking about disability? – The language around disability is so charged… how we can think about that differently. – Not to erase the identity of disability… but accept it. – Disability as diversity… not inherently negative. – Education, real and content filled, education around disability and the advocates recognizing the depth of the actions and the people involved. Let’s start in elementary. – Disability – more than just “Disability awareness month.”

Creative ways to drive the conversation about disability forward, Creative ways to raise money, etc. for locations where access is still not possible for a portion of potential patrons. Gaelynn shares her requirements for her performances and the workarounds she will and will not accept. Accommodations… they so very often serve to benefit everyone.

Who’s responsibility is it to start discussions about disability? (Spoiler alert! It is an accessible action for EVERYONE! CHA, CHA, CHA!  And has a grater effect if it does not have to fall only on the shoulders of those with disabilities.

SHOUT OUTFor seeing the vision and getting it. They put a permanent stage lift that allowed Gaelynn to get on to the stage but other regulars as well.
