The 1000 Miles Project explores the diaries of George and Josephine Scott, who documented their trek across Nevada in 1914 in four diaries, three of which still exist today and are part of the holdings at Special Collections and University Archives at the University of Nevada, Reno.  The project highlights eight separate passages from the diaries and includes corresponding video segments meant to help elementary and middle school students explore this primary source through reading, writing, math, science and art.  The diaries have been digitized by the University Libraries and are available online in their entirety.  Accessible transcripts are available for all the podcast recordings.  You can explore more of the 1000 Miles of Desert and Mountains project, a collaboration between the University Libraries at the University of Nevada, Reno and the Washoe County Libraries at library.unr.edu/1000-Miles
