    148. Only Jesus Gets to Tell You Who You Are

    148. Only Jesus Gets to Tell You Who You Are

Remember in last week's podcast episode when we alluded to how you can often pre-decide a negative narrative about yourself and you can let that cloud all your interactions with others? Instead of hearing their kind words or assuming they are sharing something out of love, you hear and see everything through the lens of a negative narrative.
In this week's podcast episode, Jesse and discuss this more in-depth. We talk about lies we've believed, how these have colored our viewpoints, and how believing these lies have kept us from living in freedom and joy.
We share more what it looks like to truly take to heart the quote from Charles Martin that says, "Only Jesus gets to tell you who you are."
In this podcast, we also give you an update on Baby D's surgery and the incredibly surprising results of his surgery. We also tell you about a great idea Jesse came up with that has been saving our lives, we talk about Aldi grocery delivery, and about a book I recently listened to.
    In This Episode
[00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. We have lots to share with you today.
[01:23] - Today we want to talk about replacing the lies with truth and how only Jesus gets to tell you who you are.
[01:29] - But before we get into that, it was a big week for Baby D!
[06:43] - We had prepared ourselves that he was going to have severe hearing loss for all his life.
[09:04] - For the first time in his life, he is able to hear! He's learning all sorts of new things as a result!
[11:28] - I just finished listening to a book by Charles Martin.
[12:56] - What’s saving my life this week: Aldi grocery delivery.
[14:20] - Jesse's brilliant purchase that is saving our life!
[17:39] - Lies versus truth and how this can impact your life.
[18:44] - Jesse, are there lies that you have believed, that you have seen how it’s just had such a negative impact on your life?
[21:06] - In Christ, we can do all things!
[23:41] - If we let what other people think of us be where our worth and value is, it’s never going to be enough
[27:59] - What does Jesus actually say about you?

    147. How We {mostly} Stopped Arguing

    147. How We {mostly} Stopped Arguing

In this week's episode of the Crystal Paine Show, Jesse and I share some of the lessons we've learned in our almost 19 years of marriage on how fight less and communicate with more grace and depth.

We talk about practical strategies, personal development and growth, and how to approach difficult conversations that could potentially lead to conflict and misunderstanding.

We also share some family updates -- especially about Baby D's upcoming surgery -- and then we talk about what we've been reading, a program Jesse has been doing to keep him accountable to health goals, a teeth whitening kit I've been loving, and more!
    In This Episode

[00:34] - Today we're talking about How We (mostly) Stopped Arguing

[02:45] - This is a big week for us as it's Baby D's big cleft palate surgery.

[09:06] - Jesse shares about what's helping him stay more accountable to health goals.

[13:32] - There are seasons for really big audacious goals. And there are seasons for just, well those little nudge goals. So figuring out which season you are in and what’s going to be best for you.

    [14:57] - A teeth whitening kit I've been loving!

[17:21] - We share about books we've been reading.

[19:44] - Let's talk about how we’ve stopped arguing -- most of the time!

[21:50] - The biggest thing that has helped us is changing our perspective of God and His love for us! Oftentimes, we can get frustrated with our spouse because we expect them to give us something that only God can give.

[23:55] - If you don't believe you are fully loved by God, it's hard to believe you are loved by others.

[25:28] - If you’ve pre-decided what your spouse, what your kids, what your co-workers, what your community, your friends, believe about you, you won't be able to really hear what they are saying.

[26:24] - We come from very different perspectives and we process the world very differently. Learning to see this as a gift has helped our communication in a big way.

[30:57] - Changing the way we approach conflict, hurt, and misunderstandings makes such a difference in allowing our conversations to be productive versus full of tense and frustration.

[32:23] - I think another thing that’s been really, really helpful for us, is just prioritizing romance and fun. Don't forget what drew you together in the first place.

    146. A Surrendered Yes (with Rebekah Lyons)

    146. A Surrendered Yes (with Rebekah Lyons)

Having open hands and an open heart is one part of A Surrendered Yes: 52 Devotions to Let Go and Live Free, the new book by Rebekah Lyons. A Surrendered Yes is also about living in the now. On today’s episode of The Crystal Paine Show, Rebekah and I talk about what it was like for her to have a child diagnosed with Down syndrome, what living a surrendered life looks like, and how God doesn’t call you to anything that He won't also give you the strength for.
Rebekah and her family have been a huge inspiration to our family as we have stepped out in faith and said yes to adopting Baby D. Watching their family and the journey they have been on and how they have trusted the Lord and lived in surrender to His calling has been such an encouragement to us.
If you are struggling to say yes and step out in faith, Rebekah's raw honesty on this episode will infuse you with courage. Don't miss it!
    In This Episode
[00:37] - Welcome to The Crystal Paine Show today we are honored to have a repeat guest, Rebekah Lyons.
[03:32] - The great joy in life is to lose your life so that you can find it again.
[04:19] - I ask Rebekah what it was like to receive the diagnosis that her firstborn had Down syndrome.
[09:44] - "If you could go back to your 26-year-old self when you were walking through this, knowing what you know now, what would you say to yourself?"
[12:47] - Rebekah talks directly to the woman who's listening who wants to have that courage but is scared.
[15:24] - If you are feeling a nudge or a whisper or something that kind of continues to surface, don't close your hands to it.
[17:34] - We talk about what it was like to say yes to adopting Joy.
[19:20] - Pay attention to your tears.
[23:49] - We segue into talking about answering those people saying "How do you do it?"
[28:28] - I ask Rebekah to close by sharing what "letting go and living free" looks like in her life right now.
[31:50] - It’s not living in tomorrow, it’s not living in yesterday. It's living today.

    144. You Were Made for This Moment (with Max Lucado)

    144. You Were Made for This Moment (with Max Lucado)

It was an honor to have Max Lucado in studio recently to talk about his new book, You Were Made For This Moment: Courage for Today and Hope for Tomorrow.
We begin the conversation with me sharing about how his children's book, You Are Special, deeply impacted my life. And then Max shared the really amazing story behind the book which you don't want to miss!
He also shared how he got started writing, about his time in Brazil, how he first made writing a priority while being a missionary, and then we transitioned to talking about his latest book, You Were Made For This Moment.
Max shares the powerful story of Esther and the lessons we can learn for modern times from this story in the Bible. We talk about showing up and how God uses that moment of showing up, even when you don’t recognize it. That you never know how those decisions to show up and step out could make such a difference long-term.
This podcast episode is packed with encouragement and inspiration and I hope it blesses you as it did me!
    In This Episode
[00:37] - Welcome to The Crystal Paine Show today we have in the studio is Max Lucado.
[01:01] - I have actually only read one book by Max Lucado and it was actually a children’s book.
[04:54] - Max shares the fascinating story behind that children's book -- which I loved hearing!
[05:10] - I ask Max to tell us more about his background.
[07:15] - He talked about becoming a Christian and signing up to be a missionary -- and I had to have him tell us more about that.
[09:24] - How did you start your writing career?
[12:19] - How can a good God be allowing all the things that have happened in the world in the last 18 months?
[15:14] - What is it about the Esther story that you see that is going to infuse people with hope?
[16:13] - Esther is one of the two books in the Bible where the name of God does not appear and yet the fingerprints of God are on every paragraph.
[19:03] - Max tells us the story of Esther -- and I learn some new facts I've never known before, even though I've read this book many times!
[22:20] - What does that look like practically, for people who they’re saying “I want to do something with my life, I feel like there’s more than just what I am living for right now but I don’t even know how to take the first step"?
[26:07] - What encouragement would you have for someone who is feeling scared about stepping out in faith?

    143. A Love Languages Quiz

    143. A Love Languages Quiz

Do you know what your love languages are? Do you know what the love languages are of those close to you? Understanding how people give and receive love can make such a difference in our relationships.
In this podcast, Jesse and I talk about what we've learned about love languages over the almost 19 years of marriage + what we learned recently in revisiting this through a Love Languages quiz we took as part of doing a Date Night in a Box recently.
In this podcast, we also give you lots of updates -- including a very important broken toilet update (you can totally laugh with us about this!) And we talk about my trip to California, losing my voice before my first speaking in-person speaking event in two years, my birthday, axe throwing, what we've been reading, and how I've struggled to finish books recently.
    In This Episode
[00:34] - Welcome to The Crystal Paine Show.
[03:26] - We have discovered the price tag of toilets.
    [04:41] - I got a really special birthday gift.
[05:37] - I went to Chino, California and spoke at the Fresh Grounded Faith event.
[08:01] - It was my first night in over 18 months that I didn’t have a baby in the room.
[08:40] - I am speaking at the same type of conference, Fresh Grounded Faith with Jennifer Rothchild this week in IL.
[09:10] - Also, I got to do axe throwing. Which I had never done before.
[10:26] - Jesse do you have any updates for us, on anything, any books you are reading or listening too?
[13:30] - I do have something that is saving my life.
[14:27] - Okay so we are going to talk about love languages today.
[16:10] - This was a hard quiz because it wasn’t multiple choice, it was two options. And you chose which one you related to more.
[17:26] - I think it’s so easy for us to assume that other people feel loved in the same way we do.
[18:41] - Jesse's love languages are physical touch and gifts.
[19:18] - For me, it is acts of service and words of affirmation.
[21:59] - I think that for sure what has changed is your (Jesse) understanding of how to show me love.
[25:18] - Going out of your way to show someone they are loved is like igniting a little spark to keep the fire of your relationship burning.
