How to protect, heal and nurture your body through Motherhood
    Emma Brockwell

You are pregnant, and just like that your body starts undertaking huge physiological and psychological change. I think sometimes we, as women, forget that during pregnancy your entire system is adapted as your body focuses on growing a new little human being. Parts become stretched, weakened and shifted as your little one thrives and develops. Then there is the matter of childbirth and regardless of how this may happen for you it is a momentous time and arguably the biggest challenge your body will ever undergo. But you can’t just put your feet up and recover as a new mum, you have a baby to care for and are often sleep deprived. And so all too often the incredible journey your body and mind have been on get forgotten and your nurturing and healing are neglected.

But on this week’s episode I am joined by an amazing guest, specialist women’s health physiotherapist, mum and now author Emma Brockwell. Emma is a woman on a mission to empower and inform women about the changes taking place in pregnant and postpartum bodies and to support them on a journey to recovery in the right way. Women have, for far too many years thought that many embarrassing or unpleasant conditions relating to women’s health were normal and something we should put up with. But the good news is that they are absolutely not, and Emma believes that all women should be informed and empowered with tools to look after and nurture their amazing bodies throughout pregnancy and motherhood.

Emma Brockwell is a Specialist Pelvic Health Physiotherapist. She treats women of all ages with all women’s health related conditions. She is passionate about pre and postnatal rehabilitation and exercise. She specialises in enabling women back to exercise, particularly running if they have any pelvic health dysfunction or are postnatal. She has co-authored the first ‘Returning to Running Postnatal Guidelines’ and has spoken about this subject at many medical and exercise conferences. Emma has written for many magazines including Women’s Running and Women’s Health magazine and has a book out in February 2021 called ‘Why did no one tell me? how to heal protect and nurture your body through motherhood.’ Emma founded and leads a Walk and Running club, Oxted Ladies Run Club. She is the co-founder of Pelvic Roar a physiotherapy led collaboration aiming to promote and unite all things ‘pelvic health’. She is on the advisory board for The Active Pregnancy Foundation and is an associate member to the Perinatal Physical Activity Research Group. She now works privately in Surrey and London and is the co-presenter of a new podcast called At Your Cervix – the podcast.

E165. How to get your newborn to sleep

How to get your newborn to sleep Midwife Pip and Calm and Bright Sleep give you all the answers.
The realities of sleep with a newborn often just don’t quite hit home until your there and if you checked out my most searched terms as a new first time mum they would almost exclusively have been sleep related. So, this episode is here to help save you from some of the pressure and anxiety I put myself under around sleep in first 6 months.
I am really looking forward to speaking today with two amazing women, Gem and Eve- founders of Calm and Bright Sleep Support who I am honestly so grateful to for these ladies who saved us in the depth of sleep deprivation with our first son and it is something I really wish I had more information on before we hit that place of utter exhaustion.

E164. BITESIZE | What is Hypnobirthing?

This Bitesize Clip is taken from Episode 15... To listen to the full episode go back and listen to Episode 15.

    What is Hypnobirthing?
Google anything to do with labour and you will likely hear the term ‘Hypnobirthing’. But it is not about chanting with charms and crystals, in fact that is a huge misconception! At its core, Hypnobirthing aims to help a woman deal with any fear or anxiety around birth and aims to equip you with methods to help you stay calm, relaxed and in control.
On this week’s episode I am delighted to be joined by Abby @abby_loveyourbirth , an experienced Hypnobirthing teacher and teacher trainer. Abby and I talk about how the practices of hypnobirthing compliment your body’s physiology in labour. By enabling your body and mind to be relaxed, birth can be less painful, quicker and a very positive experience.
Abby is based in West Yorkshire, with many years’ experience teaching hypnobirthing to expectant parents and also training and mentoring others to become hypnobirthing teachers she is the perfect guest for this weeks podcast chat. Abby helps parents to feel calm and confident about birth, equipping them with the tools to have a positive birth experience however this may happen for them. Abby really does practice what she preaches having given birth to her 4 children all through which she embraced hypnobirthing techniques.
Abby mirrors my ethos that all women should approach their birth free from fear and I hope this chat helps you to embark on your positive birth journey.

    E162. BITESIZE | How to have a Positive C-Section

This Bitesize Clip is taken from Episode 4... To listen to the full episode go back and listen to Episode 4.

How to have a positive Caesarean Birth

Currently in the UK 1 in 4 women give birth by caesarean section and it can be medically necessary and lifesaving for both mothers and babies. But a Caesarean Section birth can also be an empowering, positive and wholly fulfilling experience regardless of whether it is a planned or an emergency procedure. All too often women feel that giving birth via a Caesarean Section is in some way failing and can be associated with unnecessary guilty emotions. Women who give birth via Caesarean Section are warriors, it is impossible to fail at birth regardless of how it happens, and all birth is birth and is equally as momentous.

Naghmeh is a Delivery Suite Coordinator with over 40 years of experience, she featured as the star of Emma Willis’s Delivering Babies show and is one of the most passionate and dedicated midwives. On this week’s episode Naghmeh joins me to discuss what to expect from a Caesarean Section birth and how you can still feel in control and empowered regardless of the twists and turns that may crop up during your birthing journey. @naghmehty.
