Innovation Deficits in Solving Climate Crisis - Where are the Blue Oceans for Climate Tech in Finland?

"We already have the necessary technologies to solve climate crisis" is a phrase that you might hear often. And the phrase is correct in the sense that we do have the necessary climate technology, but unfortunately only few of those technologies are mature and many of the technologies are not even in the demonstration stage. The road to market maturity is long and full of dangers - a valley of death does not sound tempting! - and only a couple of climate technologies are market mature today.

The technologies that have hit market maturity include such as solar and wind power, and also battery electric vehicles are at the very brink of achieving maturity. The favourable development of these technologies had not happened by chance but as a result of coherent technology and innovation policies. Several European countries have been kind enough to pay big dues on behalf of all of us to bring the technologies on the shelf and competitive with polluting alternatives. Also, these countries are now reaping what they sew since their RD&D investments now bear fruit as technology solutions developed in those nations are market leaders and provide jobs and income.

What necessary climate technologies are we still lacking today and what could be Finland's role in providing them? How should our innovation system develop to enable Finland becoming a giant in climate technology? What are the roles of public and private sectors in making it happen? We will discuss these topics and much more with high-level experts!
