Dr. Zachary Garfield is Assistant Professor at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in the Faculty of Governance, Economics and Social Sciences, and co-director of The Omo Valley Research Project. He investigates how behaviors such as leadership and followership, social learning, decision-making, and economic strategies are related to group-level pressures stemming from social contexts, network dynamics, political structures, and cultural norms.

In this episode, we start by talking about leadership from an evolutionary perspective. We discuss how to identify a leader, hypotheses for the evolution of leadership, whether it is an evolved adaptation, how leadership works in small-scale egalitarian societies, the social functions of leaders and their psychological traits, and how societies transition to more inequality and how leaders become more coercive. We also talk about the universal and variable dimensions of leadership across societies, and differences between men and women leaders. We then discuss reputation and different reputation domains in human societies, and the different ways people deal with conflict resolution. Finally, we discuss whether leadership correlates with age.

Angarika Deb is senior PhD student at Central European University, Vienna. She is a cognitive anthropologist working on moral fairness, perceptions of it, and the topic of gender inequality. She has been looking at fairness perceptions as it occurs in diverse human societies, including hunter-gatherer groups, westernized groups, and different socioeconomic class groups in India.

In this episode, we start by talking about moral fairness from an anthropological perspective, and how fairness perceptions differ across societies. We discuss individual preferences, where they come from, and what factors play a role in a preference for individualism versus collectivism.
Finally, we discuss gender inequality from an anthropological perspective, and explore topics like gender equality in immediate-return hunter-gatherers, how gender inequality develops, gender inequality in industrialized societies, and imbalances in household division of labor. Finally, we talk about how we can help reduce gender inequality with the knowledge coming from anthropology.

Dr. Bella DePaulo is the leading expert on single life and has been described by The Atlantic as “America’s foremost thinker and writer on the single experience.” Dr. DePaulo coined the term “single at heart.” After two decades as a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, Dr. DePaulo moved to the West Coast, where she is currently an academic affiliate in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her latest book is Single at Heart: The Power, Freedom, and Heart-Filling Joy of Single Life.

In this episode, we focus on Single at Heart. We talk about Who the “single at heart” people are, their psychological traits, gender differences, the opportunities singlehood offers, and how single people deal with solitude. We discuss whether they feel the need to have kids, and their psychological well-being and life outcomes compared to people in romantic relationships. We talk about social and political discrimination against single people, and where the stigma against them stems from. We also discuss casual relationships, how to interpret statistics about people who do not have sex, new forms of relationships, and what people in relationships can learn from this.
