Ever wonder what the Bible would look like without compulsory hetero readings? Without hate superimposed over the words? Well, that is exactly the work done by Kali Cawthorn-Freels in her book Reclamation: A Queer Pastors Guide to Finding Spiritual Growth in the Passages That Harm Us. Check out this conversation for some more in depth looks at the possibilities behind the fundamentalist propaganda.

L Word Mississippi: Conversations on Queer Joy and Resistance with Brandiilyne Mangum Dear

L Word Mississippi: Conversations on Queer Joy and Resistance with Brandiilyne Mangum Dear

C:onverstions is back in a big way!

Ten years ago The L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin was released. An intimate look at the lives of a handful of queer women in the deep south, the documentary, while at times diffuclt to watch, gave voice to the beauty and breadth of the queer community.

In the wake of the documentary, cast member and outspoken queer activist and spiritual leader Brandilyne Mangum-Dear lead the charge for marriage equality in rural Mississippi and founded a queer church and community center.

Check out this episode of Conversations to hear about her experience in the documentary "L Word Mississippi" and the whirlwind that followed. Don’t miss this ten year follow up.

Pro Homo: The Scientific and Theological Implications of the Kinsey Reports on Modern Christianity

Pro Homo: The Scientific and Theological Implications of the Kinsey Reports on Modern Christianity

Hey friends! It’s time for another grad school/Conversations mash up! I will be chatting about the impact of the Kinsey Report (first of its kind report on human sexuality, late 1940s/early 1950s) on Christian thought, particularly in American contexts. Because this is a research paper, I share all of my citations in the video, and below in this description.

If you want the TL:DR, the Kinsey Reports galvanized two distinct and opposing theological interpretations of the Biblical view of sexuality, particularly in regard to queerness. I assert that the Kinsey reports inspired a virulent and boisterous anti LGBTQ strain of Christianity that is interconnected to themes of Christian Nationalism, Patriarchy, and Patriotism. At the same time, the Kinsey Report empowered liberal protestants to engage their theology in conversation with the developing understanding of humanity. By contrast, conservatives coalesced around staunch opposition to progress in any form.

I propose that, as a result of comprehensive and ongoing research, it is evident that queerness is not condemned by Christianity in antiquity.Anti LGBTQ religious rhetoric is a result of anachronistic readings of the scripture. The freedom and diversity of queerness is opposed by the American Evangelical constellation of churches because it frees individuals from peonage to the church.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts after you have listened to this video!

Transgender Folks, School Boards, and Preaching Hate

Let's set a few records straight. Transgender people are not evil. The Bible doesn't support it. Science doesn't support it. Stop trying to justify your personal h8.

Abortion and the Bible: A Pastoral Conversation with Pastor Adam and Leo WT

Abortion and the Bible: A Pastoral Conversation with Pastor Adam and Leo WT

APOLOGIES FOR THE LOW QUALITY AUDIO. With the recent leak of the SC(r)OTUS opinion regarding the potential overturn of Roe Vs. Wade, I (Leo) figured it was time for a decidedly pastoral conversation on the matter. I hit up my friend Pastor Adam for a chat about abortion, reproductive freedom, and what the Bible says on the matter. Plot twist, it's likely not what you have been told.

Pastor Adam of the Clackamas United Church of Christ joins the podcast to talk about church signs that make evangelical angry, the book of Isaiah, and how to pastor faithful atheists.  You can find Pastor Adam here
