Next, we’ll talk about hypocrisy and the value of a soft heart with a licorice-play-doh combo lesson. Finally, we’ll use highlighters and blacklights to teach about the gift of the Holy Ghost.

WEEK 27: SUMMARY

Lesson Summary:

This week we head deep into Lamanite territory as we follow the Sons of Mosiah on the first leg of their 14 year mission. Ammon will head to the Land of Ishmael and change the heart of King Lamoni, his wife, and many others. We’ll see how men like Ammon and women like Abish work together to live the gospel in a way that draws hearts to Jesus Christ. We’ll also study the rockier missionary road of Aaron and others who try to teach Nehor-like hearts. Ultimately, the Spirit does a mighty work through efforts of these missionaries and the tide starts to turn for the Lamanites.

Questions to Consider:

Alma 17:14 & 21:7-11 | Can Elder Maxwell’s warning about doctrines “going wild” apply to the phrase “wild, hardened, and ferocious”. Is there a progression between those three things? How does distorting doctrine begin that slippery slope?

Alma 18:1-3 | If you compare this witness to the testimony of the man born blind, what similarities do you see? How does Lamoni’s response differ from the Pharisees?

Alma 19:6 | Do you think this light is visible to Ammon or he just senses it from the Spirit? If it is visible, why can’t others see it? What scriptures help you understand this kind of spiritual ultraviolet light?

On the creative side of week 26, we’ll teach about the power of sanctification by chopping butter with various cutting tools. Next, we’ll use a stain-filled concoction to teach about the blessings of being truly changed. Finally, we’ll demonstrate how the prophecies of prophets are fulfilled by recreating Ammonihah’s one-day destruction with styrofoam cups.

Lesson Summary:
Alma and Amulek refuse to give up on the people of Ammonihah. This week, Alma will teach us about Melchizedek and his ability to use the power of the Priesthood to change a sin-sick city. Alma’s message resonates with some, but others turn violently against the truth. They’ll execute women and children in front of Alma and Amulek, almost daring them to intervene. Later, they’ll strip these mighty men of God of everything possible but Alma and Amulek stand strong. After a harrowing time in prison, they plead for help from the Lord and receive deliverance. Amazingly, they’ll use that freedom to lift the pains of Zeezrom and help restore the Nephites to peace and truth. It’s a beautiful week of study.
Questions to Consider:
Alma 14:8 | Why is the war tactic of targeting women so effective at long-term destruction? Is the opposite true? If we care for mothers, can we change the world? Could that be what motivates our Relief Society leaders today?
Alma 15:18 | What does “strengthening him in the Lord” mean? Are there important parallels between this story and the parable of the Good Samaritan or any of the miracles of Jesus from the New Testament?
Alma 16:4-8 | When have you seen other stories like this in scripture? Does this still happen today? How do leaders turn to the prophet today for economic, military, or political guidance?

Lesson Summary:
This week, Alma, we’ll travel with Alma through Melek and Ammonihah. The people in Melek heed his teachings but those in Ammonihah reject him and cast him out of their city. Thankfully, Alma’s angel returns to lift his heart and send him back to teach. On his return, he meets Amulek and the two of them become a mighty force for good. Together, they’ll slice through the tricks of the adversary with a sword of truth and preach pure, hope-filled messages of Jesus Christ.
Questions to Consider:
Alma 8:6-10 | Where else do you see shadows of Christ in Alma’s character and experiences this week? 
Alma 10:17-23 | The Spirit of Prophecy helps Amulek navigate their trick questions. What facet of your life is like this for you? When have you felt that same ease spiritually? If you haven’t, what can you learn from your other skill to help you hone your spiritual skills?
Alma 11:42-45 | Amulek uses the word “restore” and “restoration” often. Why is that such a fitting term doctrinally for resurrection? What types of things are restored? What’s the process of restoring something of great worth? What are the limitations on restoration?
