The Big Kitty, Paris International Film Festival Q&A

The Big Kitty, Paris International Film Festival Q&A

MOINSIt was one of the picks of this year’s virtual Paris International Film Festival 2021 – and THE BIG KITTY is going South, but in a good way, as it heads to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.  Several years in the making and with the level of affection and passion that only a true independent film-making team can embellish, THE BIG KITTY is an affectionate parody of 1940s cinema with the humour and visual stimulus of some of those classic John Huston / Humphrey Bogart legends like CASABLANCA and THE MALTESE FALCON.  An award-winner at Paris International Film Festival 2021, the film’s journey continues and evolves with the selection for Cannes.  Reflecting on the selection, film-makers Lisa Barmby and Tom Alberts had this to say:  “It’s maybe a once in a lifetime thing for film makers to be selected for Cannes. OK, but if these film-makers are artists with no film training and it’s their first film and it’s completely independent and they just did it themselves…well that’s mind-blowing.  It started as the question- ‘Can we make a film?’ – and ended 12 years later with THE BIG KITTY.  We’re very proud of making it with all the talented artists of Melbourne and very thrilled to be selected for Cannes Cinéphiles – Festival de Cannes. We are over the moon.  The Paris International Film Festival is simply the Best!  We recommend it to film-makers and audiences! The Director, Jenna Suru, is the most extraordinary, enthusiastic and hard-working person we’ve met. Jenna is great in English and French, really a fabulous communicator, with an international media network and is herself a talented film maker and producer.  We could have not asked for a better online film experience. The Paris International Film Festival is a fabulously positive celebration of cinema. Bravo Jenna and thank you for everything.”

The Big Kitty, Paris International Film Festival Q&A

The Big Kitty, Paris International Film Festival Q&A

Jenna Suru welcomes at the Paris International Film Festival, the filmmakers of The Big Kitty: PIFF 2021 winner of Best Experimental Feature. This film is a truly classic homage to 1940s cinema, but with the affectionate silliness of more recent contemporary comedies.

A Russian Princess is the cat’s beloved owner – and around said cat’s neck is a beautiful jewel. However, diamonds are not only a girl – or woman’s – best friend – and sure enough, the lights are pulled during a cabaret performance and the cat disappears. Enter a private detective hired by the Princess to seek out the culprits – and inevitably the trail will lead to all manner of escapades – and all manner of individuals determined to keep the detective in the dark and grey corners of the City, where anything can happen – and nothing is what it seems in this…..
