“The Birds of a Feather event was something really unique. To have so many of the old school Bay Area burning man crews pool their energy and resources to bring community together into one place, was just phenomenal. When Tamo first told me about the plans for the event, I got really excited, especially when she told me that there would be turntables poolside. I immediately started digging through my vinyl and reminiscing of the days when we would all dance together to these records. Each one of these tracks is like an old friend and getting to play them again for a dance floor of chosen family was a real treat. Thank you to all of the event planners who went above and beyond to create this very special weekend for us.”

On the RIPEcast this week close friend of ours Tadao! Recorded Live at Birds of a Feather 2024.
Tadao became captivated by Breakbeats in the sands of the Black Rock desert in 2002. Years later he joined Strategik to help throw renegades and keep the Bay area Breaks scene vibrant. In the 2000 teens, the proliferation of Breaks in the Bay Area waned. Never content to stand on the sidelines, he jumped on the decks and founded Red Hot Beverly to help keep Breaks alive and well.

I had the pleasure of joining the flock for Birds of a Feather '24 with all-stars from some of my favorite Burning Man camps and Bay Area friends. It's a pleasure and honor to throw down with you all.

The original idea was to post this around my birthday in March, after getting about halfway through I realized March wouldn't happen because... well, I was only about halfway through. I parked it to focus on other things. Then came incredibly sad news about friend and Space Cowboy, Danny. He was always a fan of the BBQ sets, and frequently asked when I'd get to another. Yesterday was Danny's birthday, so I carved out time and finished it up. Not perfect, but long af, and hopefully suitable for BBQing. RIP Danny, hope he bumps this at the big grill in the sky.

Space Cowboy resident Rumblemunk is up on this week's RIPEcast with his live set from Breakfast of Champions 2024!

In his words "I’m not a turntable-ist or an OG breakbeat DJ/producer, but when your set is in between Cut Chemist and Elite Force, whaddya do?

This set starts with a supporting MC, blazes through a mash-up of Drummatic Twins re-releases (thanks Nick), followed by my BOC 2023 release Shake That Thing, stops in with some Nick Thayer, bounces through my Eminight’s Doom bootleg, then settles in for an Elite Force medley (thanks Simon) that ends with playing the CDJ like an instrument. Brass Monkey gets us back on track heading towards a half time grind and shake, then resetting with a classic breakbeat, ending with my latest release, a Tears For Fears bootleg.

Breakfast of Champions + It’s a New Day is always the best party of the year and I love the event because it’s indeed a new day and everyone is there full of optimism for a fresh start. It’s always an honor to play there and it was also my first time playing on the Mog, about a decade after dancing to DJs on the Mog inspired me to DJ! This set harkens back to some of the breaks roots and also features an original track on an EP that was recently released (https://kevnull.bandcamp.com/album/how-about-drums) I hope you enjoy it! -kev/null
