    Scot Turner: Airwaves and Soundwaves

Another episode years in the making. Scot Turner recently retired from Evanov Radio in Brantford, Ontario. Scot discussed his experiences in radio programming, sharing insights on how to navigate challenges and create successful radio stations, including CFNY, 94.5 The Beat, Dave-FM in Kitchener, and many more. Scot emphasized the importance of blending genres, catering to a specific audience, and adapting to changing listener preferences. We also discussed the evolution of dance music on radio, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, and the challenges and opportunities in urban radio programming in Canada during the early 1990s.

We got deep into the weeds on the integration of hip hop and urban music into Canadian radio formats and the impact of streaming platforms on traditional radio. Highlighted are the nostalgia and importance of CFNY, culminating in a forthcoming documentary supported by Corus Entertainment. Finally, we emphasized the significance of celebrating radio's history through anniversaries and innovative programming, offering a rich perspective on the medium’s past and future.

    Heather Furr: Getting Digital Direction

    Heather Furr: Getting Digital Direction

Heather Furr is the Director of Digital for the Bob & Sheri Show. They have 70 radio affiliates that they work with. Inside the walls of one radio station, digital strategy is an ongoing discussion and debate over best practices, staying on brand and what makes content go viral. Heather's work day is about deciding what is important in the moment and making sure the show is represented online whenever and all the time. (Yes I wrote that)

Our discussion included the challenges faced by young people in the radio industry, including limited opportunities for growth and development, lack of competitive pay, and the need for radio to adapt to changing times. Heather the importance of adapting to industry trends, managing expectations, and providing education and training to support young talent. We also highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of industry professionals, including promotions assistants, traffic department staff, and digital content creators. Additionally, Heather mentioned the significance of social media in creating a sense of community and connection among their audience, and the importance of building a strong online presence for radio stations. Finall,y (and this is the best part) Heather shared her strategies for creating a community around their podcast and prioritizing digital platforms.

Sue Haas: Fast Forward To Video

Sue Haas: Fast Forward To Video

Last time Sue Haas was on the show, she had just moved over from Blue Ant Media to start as the President and COO of NLogic. Well, almost a year has gone by since then, and Sue's back to let us know how it's going.

If you're listening in Canada, you're probably aware that NLogic has been a steady supporter of this show for a long time now. We use their services all the time to source ratings data, but as Sue explains, you're dead wrong if you think that's all they have to offer.

Sue also speaks about what the transition was like, and how she's had to adapt since joining NLogic. After all, it's not every day someone joins a company starting at the very top, and the first year of decision-making is crucial. Thankfully, Sue's been more than capable of keeping up. We talk shop on the technical side, and she shares the thought process behind the direction she wants the company to head in. As it turns out, there's a whole lot to look forward to in the world of media metrics, data and data strategy. The future sounds pretty darn promising.

If you think NLogic could benefit your business or podcast, I encourage you to head to their website to learn more about what they can do for you. And if you want to stay up-to-date on the newest happenings in the media metrics landscape, sign up for NLogic's newsletter for information on upcoming webinars.

Roz Weston: It Almost Never Happened

Roz Weston: It Almost Never Happened

I reached out to Roz Weston when he was releasing his book, A Little Bit Broken in September of 2022. So that is not completely true - I sent an email to the publisher requesting an interview and you know how that can go. Publisher prefers TV over a podcast so on and so forth. It was another show in our company The Women of Ill Repute that had a really great interview about the Roz and the book... one that I didn't think I would be able to best. So I left it be.

Now comes a new podcast from the Frequency Podcast Network called The History of Roz & Mocha. It is six episodes on how they came together, why the show works and how it has lasted 14 years when most armchair PD's gave it 14 months.

    Arielle Nissenblatt: Resident Podcast Enthusiast

    Arielle Nissenblatt: Resident Podcast Enthusiast

We last had Arielle Nissenblatt on episode 307 a few years ago and loved the enthusiasm and energy she brings to the space. So much has changed in two years including many things that pertain to marketing like social media and video usage - so you have an idea where this conversation is headed. This is some all encompassing involvement: Her Ear Buds Collective Newsletter, The Trailer Park Podcast which discusses the good and bad of Podcast Trailers, The Podcast Community Discord Channel, She is the Community Marketing Manager at Descript, and she is also on the Board of Governors of the Podcast Academy.

In this episode, you will hear Arielle tell me how she reacted when she found out that Descript would be purchasing Squadcast, why she is not excited about Threads, what makes a great podcast trailer and why she started a podcast about it, and why the Podcast Academy is important for all podcast creators.

Craig Bruce: It's Different Down Under

Craig Bruce’s radio days started in 1986 hosting shows in Australia. He now consults for radio stations and launched a podcast called Game Changers Radio in 2016, featuring interviews with radio personalities from around the world. While the show podfaded in 2020, it is the new series called Melbourne Radio Wars, which documents Kyle and Jackie O’s entry into the Melbourne radio market.

On this episode, you will hear about the differences between Australian and North American radio. The key to Kyle and Jackie O's success is their chemistry from 20 years working together, Kyle's humor, Jackie's ideas, and excellent resourcing/marketing by the station, and how Craig works with younger producers to bring fresh ideas.
