As Sumner says: “ComicBooks for Kids is a wonderful charity founded by Mark Weiss that does amazing work getting comic books into the hands of children in long-term hospital care on both sides of the Atlantic. Myself and Kenric Regan & John Horsley have always admired Dickens’ timeless seasonal message of empathy & civic responsibility, and thought ‘what better way to underline & amplify ComicBooks for Kids’ mission than to return to the words of Charles Dickens himself, the great believer in human society pulling together?’ Please visit their website CB4K.org, please check them out and please do what you can to help.”

HA – Max Allen Collins Interview
[00:00:00] Sumner: Here we go, that’s it. So we don’t have to worry about how we look on camera though. You look great mate, because it’s just going to be the audio. So we don’t have to be out our usual, you know, um, uh, Sinatra, Martin standard of male beauty for this apiece.
Max Allen Collins: It’s audio sparkle, not video spark.
    Sumner: Yeah, exactly.
That’s exactly right. Yeah. Spot on mate. Um, yeah,

Hard Agree – Garth Ennis Interview

[00:00:00] Sumner: Yeah. That’s that’s that gun right there. And what he’s done is he’s walked throughout the land. Brilliantly coming, crosses the, the affable side of the rule in class, getting everybody to call him by his first name, embracing that and acting the lovable buffoon. But actually he is truly, truly fucking dangerous to me.
Garth Ennis: He’s a nasty piece of work. I remember after the coalition ended, one of the two liberal members of Cameron’s cabinet, not the leader of the liberals, but the other one said that when he was, he was asked was asked about the Tories and what it was like to serve alongside of this particular generation of stories.
And he said, you, he said, you could take David Cameron as an example, but really it doesn’t matter which one. He said that individually they’re quite charming, but collectively they&#8

Hard Agree – Dave Gibbons Cut Interview

[00:00:00] Dave Gibbons: Andrew asked me anything, basically it’s the best I’m sure. I’m sure. I’m sure I can still bat it away into the long
Sumner: grass. Well, I’ll do a little bit of an intro. Do a preamble intro. You know, we’ll do a little bit of an intro now. So I I’m privileged to be joined by none of them, Dave Gibbons. How are you, mate?
I’m very well. Andrew, how are you? Yeah, very well. We were just talking off camera about the about the whole the whole scenario with the pandemic. And I’m pleased to see that you were forging ahead through that
Dave Gibbons: mate. I am. I am. And I have had my job as I’m a respected elder citizen, and I’m very relieved to have it, to have had it.

Very much enjoyed Evangeline’s Library of the soul

Wasn’t familiar with Sumner’s work, only started listening to his podcast when Evangeline Lilly joined him for a 7 episodes arc. Of course I loved her work in Lost and since then, but I fell for the person she comes across as via her social media and appreciated her tremendously, even more so now, after these conversations. Peeking inside her inner world for the past 6 weeks or so was a thought-provoking experience, one I feel was only enhanced by having Sumner opposite her. It wasn’t just his wealth of experience as a moderator that shone through and enabled such a free flowing yet rhythmic conversation, but it was inspiring to see, in this world characterized by division more so than anything else, that two fundamentally different people are not that different at all. Any other time or place two people such as Evangeline and Andrew would have literally gone to war, actual, physical war, over their seemingly opposite beliefs. And yet when you break it down, they didn’t just “hard agree” on quite a few topics but gradually uncovered that you can slap whatever labels you want on people or things, what matters is that we make the space, mostly within ourselves, for acceptance and for future revelations and discoveries. Not one person is today what they will be tomorrow. But I digress. I thoroughly enjoyed these episodes and will continue to listen to Sumner even after Lilly’s stint.

Essential

Sumner shows his love and in-depth knowledge of the medium(s), and the result is a series of warm and enthusiastic interviews that are more like eavesdropping on friends talking about common interests in the pub. Recommended.

That’s a Hard Agree

Unrivalled knowledge and passion. Andrew speaks to the guests and subject matter with insight, inquisitiveness and the heart of a super-fan, taking us on a journey of facts, anecdotes and opinions. The Batman ’66 episode in particular was a thoroughly enjoyable examination of the best ever incarnation of Batman, at the same time evoking childhood memories whilst sharing astute observations that make me want to watch the series all over again. Time well spent!
