    #29 - Jonny Hylton

Jonny Hylton former England 7s and Premiership player with Wasps and Worcester is my guest this week.

Our careers converged from diametrically opposite directions in 2010 at Esher Rugby club where we were team-mates for a couple of joyful seasons.

This interview was recorded in January of 2020 and we discussed Jonny’s endless list of nicknames, what it was like to be a youngster at Wasps and being taken under the wing of then England full-back - Josh Lewsey, the disappointment of being released as a 22-year and then being at a struggling premiership club, fighting through injuries and desperately trying to get established, the incredible experience of playing for England 7’s during the absolute glory days under former guest and friend of the pod - Mike Friday and the decision to step down from full-time rugby and look ahead to a future career. All that and there is some coaching chat as well.

    #28 - Piers Mitchell

Piers Mitchell and I met in Africa in 2017 whilst on a rugby outreach program and I caught up with him at Richmond Rugby Club in January of 2020.

We talked about our time coaching kids in Africa with The Bhubesi Pride, Piers’ self-admittedly limited playing career, some amazing stories about playing rugby around the world, Touch Rugby and how it can be used a development and outreach tool to grow the game, club sustainability, and lastly what it’s like to be a rugby Dad and living life vicariously through his son.

This is one of the most wide-ranging conversations in Amateur Rugby Podcast history, there’s a bit of something in here for absolutely everyone, so sit back, relax and please welcome Piers Mitchell.

    #27 - Bill Blythe

Bill Blythe and I met at Old Colfeians a good few years ago now. He was a late-comer to our sport but has since immersed himself as a player, captain, sponsor, committeeman and coach.

This interview was recorded in January of 2020 and we discussed what it was like for him to break into the game as an adult, rugby cultures around the world, participation numbers in the modern game and some great tips about how to build a positive rugby culture when coaching kids.

    #26 - Lynn Evans

    #26 - Lynn Evans

Lynn Evans is my guest this week.
Without doubt this episode is the one that has been most looked forward to by you.
I’ve been receiving messages for months asking when it was due to air and just this week, Dan Cottrell said "Wow, what a guest. One of the original thinkers. Games in training owe a massive debt to this guy” and Russell Earnshaw described Lynn simply as a “Hero".
This interview was recorded in January of 2020 and Lynn took me on a lovely journey through his life from growing up as a boy in Wales, joining the RAF, playing for Oxford and Oxfordshire in the County Championship. We then went deep into his love of coaching and his two major coaching influences Chalkie White and Pierre Villepreux.
I found Lynn delightful and engaging and if I have half of his energy when I’m in my 80’s I will be incredibly grateful.

    #25 - David Cheng

David Cheng a Rugby Development Coach for the RFU is my guest this week.

Chengy and I first met on a training pitch around 7 years ago and we’ve pretty much done nothing apart from talk rugby ever since.

This interview was recorded on New Years Eve in 2019 and we covered a lot of ground including: Old Colfeians Club legends - and why they became legends, how children gain enjoyment from playing rugby, coaching philosophies and player pathways. And, as a former journalist, he even fired a few testing questions back my way.

It’s a fabulous chinwag and I hope you get as much out of it as I did.

    #24 - Mark Collier

Mark ‘Moxy’ Collier and I were team-mates for Cheltenham Colts back in the early ’90s when our hair was long and our shorts were short - we had our whole lives ahead of us!

This interview was recorded in December of 2019 and we talked about how Moxy made himself an integral part of that Cheltenham Colts squad even though he rarely got in the team, some awesome rugby club traditions and Moxy’s foray into podcasting as a co-host for the UTS Podcast.
