Zoroastrianism: Ancient Persia's Lost Religion (with Professor Almut Hintze)

Zoroastrianism: Ancient Persia's Lost Religion (with Professor Almut Hintze)

In this episode, Professor Almut Hintze sheds light on the ancient and mysterious religion of Zoroastrianism.

For over two millennia, it was one of the world's most practiced religions until the arrival of Islam in the seventh century led to its rapid decline. Today, just 120,000 adherents remain worldwide.

Come with us as we dive into Zoroastrianism:

Exploring Avestan, the 'Language of God' still used in prayers today, despite its meaning being long forgotten.

Discover the ritual complexity of The Yasna and the lighting of 16 Sacred Flames, each kindled from a different source.

We also follow the sad history of modern Zoroastrians, a shrinking minority in their homeland of Iran.

Professor Hintze's dedication to preserving and cataloguing ancient rituals and their meanings is a testament to her commitment to preserving this fascinating piece of human history.
Join us as we discuss the history, rituals and language of one of the worlds oldest religions

Hitler's 1941 Invasion of Russia | Part 2: Rage Of The Reich

Hitler's 1941 Invasion of Russia | Part 2: Rage Of The Reich

"If the Germans want a war of extermination, they will get it!" - Joseph Stalin.

Brilliant podcast

I found this podcast through a recent obsession with King Alfred the Great - I have listened to many podcasts and read lots about him, but still learned so much from the two episodes Elliot made. I’ve since listened to many other of his episodes and they’re all the perfect balance of factual information, story-telling, and humour. He really sets the scene well, which along with his jokes, makes the history interesting and relatable. The whole things feels professional: the background music and sound effects, the narrators voice is clear and maintains a great pace, and he is eloquently spoken, and he includes such a wide variety of information, from contemporary quotes to modern day polls. I also love the fact there’s an Instagram page where the listeners can go to see the paintings and artefacts which are referenced. Perhaps what I love most is the fact that this is no-nonsense history; in my experience, it is almost impossible to listen to a historical podcast without a political message being forced and the listener being made to consider it through the politically correct lenses of the modern day. It is refreshing to have a history told without a “woke” sub context.

There’s only one tiny niggling remark: a couple of things didn’t quite add up - I seem to remember (but could be wrong!) the podcast saying that Reading is east of London, for example. But from an Aussie bloke on the other side of the world from our tiny island, I can most certainly forgive a few tiny mistakes when he does our history so much justice. And I can’t wait to learn about the history of other countries around the globe. Thank you Elliot for your hard work!!
