Art is the truest expression of the workings of the mind, free from learned language. More than that, it is the visual expression of culture, politics, society, religion, emotion, zeitgeist, channeled through the brush, chisel, or hands of creative individuals. Understanding art allows us to understand history: to pin it with images, and pepper it with the faces, colours, drama and expression of its time. This series is designed to give bite-sized insights into the world of Art History, bringing one image to life across a wide-ranging discussion with experts. History is never far from view, so each image will be expanded to sit within the cultural and historical context that produced it.

Fab!

I’m so glad this is back after a little break. Janina is so uplifting and of course very knowledgeable. I took a trip to see a cathedral after seeing it enthused by her in a documentary. Thank you.

A great listen!

I have just discovered this fantastic pod cast and am working my way through the episodes from the beginning. The Hogarth one was really enlightening! Unfortunately the links to artworks seem to have expired so having to google them and can’t always find a good clear image, but otherwise thoroughly enjoying them.
