Welcome to the Black Dog Runner podcast (formerly GYTC). Dedicated to exploring issues around mental health and how running and living an active lifestyle can help us all live with our 'black dog'. Sometimes an interview, often a monologue, but always informal, honest and hopefully of help to somebody, not just me!

Mental Fitness and Metaphor with Anthony Taylor

Mental Fitness and Metaphor with Anthony Taylor

A different approach to this episode in that it will be published simultaneously on both this podcast and Anthony's, 'The Mental Fitness Podcast'.

Anthony and I share a passion for promoting conversations around mental health and in this episode we explore our personal experiences as well as those of others in a 'fireside chat' kind of thing!

Subjects explored include Anthony's work within mental fitness models and frameworks, our shared interest in Stoicism and the use of metaphor in demystifying mental health and ultimately empowering all of us to 'self-medicate'.

Reflections on the 24hr Self-Transcendence Track Race

Reflections on the 24hr Self-Transcendence Track Race

It's now the end of the week after the weekend before. The legs and knees have recovered and the feet are almost back to their normal size. So what did I learn at my first ultra marathon and one that took place in the centre of London on a 400m track?

Turns out quite a bit really and revealed a whole lot about managing my mental state and grabbing hold of the joy that taking part in these long events can bring.

But did I attain self-transcendence? Have a listen to find out!

A Mental Health Waffle with Taylor James

A Mental Health Waffle with Taylor James

This episode is one from the vault. It's the last one I recorded when this show was called 'Give Yourself the Chat', but for various reasons, mainly owing to my own mental health challenges, it never got published.

But with the re-launch of this show as Black Dog Runner, it's the perfect time to publish and in many ways perhaps fate has intervened and decided that publishing earlier would not have been the right thing to do anyway. Who knows?

What I do know is that this was one of my most enjoyable chats and Taylor was a superb guest to have on the show. Honest, vulnerable and funny, it's a great way to start the conversation about mental health and the challenges we face. I hope you enjoy this one.

Finding Joy Just by Going Round and Round?

Finding Joy Just by Going Round and Round?

This weekend marks my first attempt at an ultra marathon. I will be taking part in the Sri Chimnoy 24hr Self-Transcendence race at Battersea Park, London, UK. Oh, and it's conducted round a 400m athletics track! No change of scenery, unless you count the switch of direction every 4 hours; no hills, no trails. Just me, my thoughts and endurance to sustain me.

I can't wait! It will be an opportunity to explore my limits and devote a whole day to the purity of running. Here I will be testing out my theory that I'm at my happiest when running. This exploration into the pain cave will reveal all - I hope.

    New Name, Same Old Bloke!

    New Name, Same Old Bloke!

It's been a while since my last podcast and in that time I've decided to change emphasis and focus on two subjects I'm passionate about. Ultra endurance events (running, Ironman etc) and talking about mental health. The pair go hand-in-hand as far as I'm concerned as the former helps me manage the latter.

Inspired by the WHO video called 'I had a black dog, it's name was depression', this episode is a short explainer ahead of what I hope will be some interesting interviews and self-reflections on these subjects.

    Exploring Stoicism with John Sellars

    Exploring Stoicism with John Sellars

What is Stoicism? Why is it on the rise? And what can we learn from this ancient philosophy that can help us as we navigate the challenges of modern life? These are just some of the areas I discuss as a newcomer to this topic with John Sellars, not only for my own understanding but also to encourage you to delve deeper into this most practical of philosophies.

John is a Reader in Philosophy at Royal Holloway, University of London, a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London (where he is an Associate Editor for the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle project), and a member of Wolfson College, Oxford (where he was once a Junior Research Fellow). He is the author of The Art of Living: The Stoics on the Nature and Function of Philosophy (2003; 2nd edn 2009), Stoicism (2006), Hellenistic Philosophy (2018), Lessons in Stoicism (2019), and Marcus Aurelius (2020).He is one of the founder members (and currently Chair) of Modern Stoicism, the group behind Stoic Week and Stoicon.

Great thought provoking content

Pete is an enagaing host and brings out the most in his guests, his style hits the sweet spot between informal chat and insightful content.
Particulary liked the conversation around Vulnerability, I think 'staged' vulnerability could best be described as refelcting on past or imagined future vulnerability where as geniune vulnerability is by its very nature 'of the moment'
