Hugo & Otto ,

A solo Mumprenuer inspired

Hello my name is Caroline Bate & I am the founder of Hugo & Otto.
We are striving to produce the best of British designed dog products with fabrics sourced from British companies & made by our small British manufacturers around the UK. Right down to every detail we are championing British and yes, even our product labels are made right here in good old Blighty.

We are a teeny tiny small team of 2 humans that’s me & my son who is just about to leave for Uni in Lincoln & 2 very im-pawtent members of the board Hunter our Labrador is head of quality dog bed control and Finnbar MacBrigadoon our little wire hair dachshund who’s primary concern is chief stealer of hearts and fox pop hunter.

Like many Mumprenuer’s the journey of setting up, finding funds and finding the fight to carry on can be a lonely one. One minute I’m chief bottle washer at home, then full on accountant, business planner, research & development head, designer, sales negotiator, head of social media (oh lord I mean I used to work a telex machine in the day & computers where the size of a small house!) next pr consultant and sales advisor.
I’m sure also I have shares in Enterprise van hire by the amount of hires we have this year alone. Hiring vans, loading them up heaving heavy dog beds (generally on my head) and driving through the night to the other side of the UK to set up stands ready to talk to our customers and this year it’s been mostly in the rain right! But it’s important to me, I feel getting to talk to our customers face to face is vital for your brand, your passion and understanding of the product, service offering will shine through and that positivism interaction just keeps you going.

It was whilst standing in the pouring rain on a trade stand a few weeks back that along came a beautiful soul, a lady who was just starting out on her business journey, she wanted to understand my creativity of branding. She asked me to join her at Holly & Co’s Inspirational Talk at Manchester Cathedral to listen to Holly but also the fabulous Mark Constantine from Lush.

We met up, grabbed a quick G&T at this amazing venue (gosh a bar set up right in the middle of the Cathedral bring it on Holly!) and sat down to listen to Holly’s story who then introduced Mark. Oh my, what a joy to listen to both, Mark is just such a lovely chap, championing sustainability, crafting new business opportunities for small suppliers to work with, he sees value in his staff by giving them an opt in decision of being a shareholder. Giving them the legs to stretch out and fulfil their dreams by experimenting. He champions the high street (& challenged Holly I’m that conversation) he sees value in talking to your customer face to face. A strong family man with a history of being surrounded by strong women and his life, a journey of life in business and personally that has been hard, he made us giggle, he made us cry, Mark is truly an inspiration to us all, it’s ok to fail it’s how you get up and learn from it that matters.

And Holly, what a lady, what a beautiful inspiring gift you have Holly, you are genuinely out there wanting to help other small business owners from Kidprenuers and oldies like me a single Mumprenuer to family businesses and super charged high flyers all who had to fight to get there with open arms.

We absolutely adore you Holly, keep inspiring, keep following your heart, we wish you every ounce of success and all that your dreams may have wished for with Holly & Co.
Here’s to your next Conversation of Inspiration I’m with you all the way!

Love from up North (in Cheshire)

A great podcast to subscribe and listen to if you are or have dreams of running your own small brand business. Priceless tips and inspiration for a life led as a self employed business owner. Would just like to see more interviews now with business owners who have built a brand through the idea of wellbeing and helping others. Thanks for the daily inspiration Holly! Your Happy fest talk was fabulous!

Warm and inspiring

This is a great podcast. Holly is clearly a very lovely human being - so warm, passionate and enthusiastic. You can hear how much she enjoys interviewing her guests, which seems all the more wonderful considering the enormous success she is herself! The Fearne Cotton episode was particularly great. In the future, I’d love to hear Jacqueline Gold from Ann Summers and Anna Whitehouse (Mother Pukka) on her Flex Appeal campaign. But I look forward to more fantastic interviewees soon!
