Great podcast, even for a POM
Living in London, AFL was nothing more than an annual trip to a Walkabout pub with my Aussie wife, watching the grand final of the funny game of rugby played on a cricket pitch. Highlights included Reg’s bumps and bloopers, a meat pie, endless pints of VB and almost no understanding of what was happening on the screen.
After moving to Melbourne two years ago I have totally fallen for the game. The distinct club identities, the idiosyncrasies such as the songs and the banners and, of course, the on field action have hooked me completely. Crawf and Hirdy is an fantastic podcast, showing great affection for the game while also providing detailed analysis where required. From listening, I’ve learned a great deal about the game, both the tactics and the culture, and they appear to have struck a good balance between entertainment and knowledge so far.
On the hosts...
Having married into a family of rabid Bombers supporters, I’ve always heard James Hird spoken about in the hushed tones of true hero worship. It has been great to put a voice to the myth and hear his insightful comments and, more surprisingly, his sarcastic humour every week. A joy to listen to.
On a slightly less regular schedule is Shane Crawford. Throw out your preconceptions here. He may be a children’s tv presenter and the unfairly designated clown of the footy show but Crawf knows his football. He backs it up every week with his predictions and you won’t go too far wrong with your tipping following him. Genuinely impressed at his knowledge of the game and his understanding of what makes people/teams tick. He’s great.
And I can’t forget Ralph. He keeps the show on the road, the talent under control(-ish) and chimes in where needed. I can’t imagine the show would even be happening without his deft hand on the reins.
All in all, a great podcast and a truly invaluable listen for the AFL novice!
