In a world that is increasingly bewildered, there is a need to talk about, discuss and learn from people who are doing things in their own way. We are all trying to survive and get along. There's nothing better than a good chat, a cup of tea, and a chance to ask questions about how things work. We might even use our imagination to try to figure out what would be a better way of doing things, and what we need to stop doing that we don't like any more. Sharing stories and personal experiences.

Distraction Therapy 058 - Lucy Stevens Sound and Visual Artist

It was lovely to have an early morning walk in the frost with sound and visual artists Lucy Stevens. We walked through Leicester’s Aylestone Meadows and Lucy told me about how she approaches here work, how she finds inspiration in nature, and her future project working with Leicester Museum to curate an exhibition that depicts and opens-up to view the preserved bird collection.

Distraction Therapy 057 - Rob and Ryan Discuss Metamodernism

Distraction Therapy 057 - Rob and Ryan Discuss Metamodernism

In this episode I chat with Ryan Clayton about our expectations for the coming year, and how we make sense of our experiences in relation to the creative work that we read, watch, listen to and view in our cultural lives. We are exploring what a metamodern approach to social life means, and how we can move on from our previous views we’ve acquired and learnt. Distraction can be both a destructive and a creative way of engaging with the world, but if we don’t hold conversations about what works and what doesn’t work for us, then we won’t be able to grow and adapt to the changing world.

Distraction Therapy 051 - Metamodern Turn

Distraction Therapy 051 - Metamodern Turn

I want to use the Distraction Therapy podcast to explore what metamodernism means, and how our culture is shifting towards something that goes beyond postmodernity. We’ve established that we live in a world of signs and media, but we’ve not taken full account of how meaning is found in the depths of our shared consciousness. I certainly don’t know the answers, and I have only a limited ability to express what I’m sensing in words, so we’ve got to turn to art and creative practice to figure out what direction we are heading in and where we might find ourselves in years to come.

I chatted with Traci Howard about what it means to be an artist in Leicester, and the importance of using art to inspire people to feel connections. Find out more at West End Studio Trail on Instagram. This is a group of artists from the West End in Leicester who are opening up their studios and creative spaces to the public, to share their art and ideas. Taking place on Saturday the 20th November from 12pm to 5pm.
