    Spotlight Episode 5: Chandy Green

“you’re an expert in your own life”

This week on Spotlight we’re talking to Chandy Green about life growing up with a tumour and turning it into a super-power of lived experience to help others. There’s fundraising activity, educating the students of Cambridge University and how a global pandemic is pretty much the worst thing someone with OCD can face. There’s also the embarrassment of delivering the zoom wave face to face and a meeting of the dweebs.

Episode 62: Raising £100m in six weeks with Ellie Orton and NHS Charities Together

Episode 62: Raising £100m in six weeks with Ellie Orton and NHS Charities Together

"An amazing man who inspired the world to give"

Our chat with Ellie features three famous figures - Captain Tom, Joe Wicks and £100m. Before that we talk vertigo, the practice of ubuntu and Tom Hanks’ favourite fish and chip shop.

An eclectic episode includes smuggling bibles into Romania, prompting a revolution and restructuring yourself out of an organisation. Then we get on to realising the potential for a sleeping giant and what happens when you raise £100m in six weeks whilst simultaneously ticking off the aims from your five year strategy, without leaving your kitchen table. There’s still time for everyone’s favourite PE teacher to call from the bank, to hear all about how the captain broke JustGiving and we discover how to lead in a crisis. There’s also a contender for the most stressful first two weeks in a role on record as we discuss the amazing story of NHS Charities Together with CEO Ellie Orton.

"Tell them they lack diversity. Tell them they need you."

Long-time listener, first-time interviewee, Alice joins us this week to talk about pushing for more young representation on trustee boards. At present only three in a hundred trustees are under thirty and that doesn't represent many charities or their beneficiaries.

We talk about how to go about finding roles and applicants, what to expect and why Kenneth has a tie on in his tik-toks.

Spotlight Episode 3: Hannah Sayers / Small Change

“I call it my accidental business”

Spotlight returns with the tale of an idea which has grown from our guest supporting her local foodbank through a three-fold increase in demand, to aiding a host of organisations who prop up communities. Hannah Sayers explains how she accidentally recruited a team of fundraisers for free and made a difference in combating inequality in the sector.

The boys also reveal their prowess in reaching the pinnacle of both golf and hangovers.

Episode 61: Talking inspiration with the Big Pink Dress

“It’s gotten way bigger than I thought it would“

Episode 61 features a larger than life character in Colin Burgin Plews, better known in fundraising and running circles as the Big Pink Dress. He tells us how he was a shy lad as a youngster but found a talent for running in the Navy and went on to don his iconic outfit at races from the Great North Run to the London Marathon.

We hear about how he was influenced by Diana Ross to ditch the Hawaiian shorts, met Nancy Sinatra in the green room and got confused counting rhinos. There's the spark which got him started and the inspiring individuals who keep him going on the road. Meanwhile Kenneth shows off on the dancefloor and James worries about beetles.

“there’s a collective grief going on”

Our second spotlight episode features a sadness for the sector and whether the future could involve a gig economy on fixed term shorter contracts. We’re talking about balancing short and long term objectives and how it’s tough for those left behind in teams too.
