61: 80s Demos - Part 3: Welcome To Hell Hotel

Salutations! Or have you seen this episode? Jordan and Dave's pain is your karma as they exchange some fighting words and complete their archival dig through the 1980s demos of They Might Be Giants (for now.) We're here to make you happy, as half of this episode is our long awaited and belated Hell Hotel discussion! Is the song based on a Twilight Zone episode? Is that an Outer Limits reference? Why wasn't this song ever on an album? Who is Sebastian C.? WHAT DOES HE MEAN BY THIS? We also listen to some hellish demos of the demo!

Then we might be chewing on a pair of feet as we listen to early versions of They Might Be Giants (the song.) Finally, the people are so happy now that we're closing out the 1985 demo tape with the wild and woolly demo of Nothing's Gonna Change My Clothes! All this, plus a surprise rare bonus song! Va-va-va-voom this is a sweet life! ALBATROSS!

    59: 80s Demos - Part 1: I'm Already Dead

    59: 80s Demos - Part 1: I'm Already Dead

We're back...in time! Jordan and Dave take out their dusty scrapbooks and look into the They Might Be Giants of years past. First we discuss their very first release, the Wiggle Diskette, a very limited vinyl distributed all over NYC in 1985. Then we continue on with the first batch of songs on TMBG's infamous 1985 demo tape!

But do you think we stop there? Oh ho ho, foolish listener, doth thee not know of whom we be? Our minds become a blur of common sense as we discuss every demo and alternative version of these songs we could find! We're talking THREE Puppet-Heads, FOUR You'll Miss Mes, TWO Number Threes, and one uncomfortably intimate When It Rains It Snows! Including NEW revelations about these songs not addressed in our initial episodes! We then end the show with a very special guest, Margaret Seiler, the singer of Boat of Car! Take this car for a ride!

57: Interview with People Magazine's Michael Small!

As a prologue for our upcoming deep dive into They Might Be Giants' 1980s demos, we spoke with the legendary Michael Small, the People Magazine writer who first reviewed TMBG's demo tape in 1985 and gave them their first huge exposure, telling (or warning) the world about the madness to come!

Michael tells us about the first time he heard the tape, the songs that got stuck in his head, appearing in the documentary Gigantic, his relationship with They Might Be Giants over the years, and more exciting tales of music journalism! He also tells us about his incredibly fun new show, I Couldn't Throw It Out, which recently interviewed John Flansburgh! Links below!

Excellent podcast and thoroughly interesting, entertaining and enjoyable. Jordan and Dave ‘know their onions’ as my Gran used to say in respect of TMBG.

It’s highly likely some of their interpretations of the music and lyrics are wrong but they know that and we know that and we don’t care. TMBG are pretty elusive as to the meaning of their lyrics at the best of time and Jordan and Dave give a damn good try to interpret them.

Before I started listening to these podcasts I was a little sceptical that around 8 hours covering one album may be a smidge excessive but having listened to all up to Apollo 18 I’ve now no concerns and love that they can bang on for 45 minutes about the lyrics and music on one three minute song!

I was first into TMBG when my cousin introduced me to Flood around its release and I adore their albums up to and including Apollo 18. After this I’ve rather tailed off but this isn’t linked to their output post A18 but I’ve had less exposure to the albums after that. I intend to use this podcast to rectify this and while I’m fairly convinced post A18 won’t be their heyday (in my view) it’s still TMBG so likely to be highly listen-to-able regardless.

Jordan is what my son would call an utter ‘neek’ ( nerd / geek) but I suspect he’d wear this as a badge of honour and the lengths he goes to for research is admirable. Dave is never less than amusing with his very dry wit and the two make a great pair.

I’ve also had many a pleasant and helpful exchange with them (I suspect Jordan) over Twitter and they’ve given me some great recommendations for other listening.

I’ve found some podcasts where the subject material is right up my street but due to the hosts annoyingness I can’t listen. This subject matter is heaven for me listening along in the car and the hosts are very amiable and good natured which only goes to improve the listening experience.

A MUST listen for any TMBG fan

This podcast is anything a TMBG fan could ever want! The attention to detail and depth of research about the band/songs/everything is incredible. Dave and Jordan are perfect hosts - whilst being amazingly informative, you just feel like you’re listening in on two good friends hanging out and having a brilliant time. I’m torn between savouring each episode or tearing through the whole thing!

Memo to myself: don’t do the things I gotta do, listen to this podcast instead.

Great Job!

Absurdly detailed and fascinating...the level of research these guys put into their show is insane! I’ve learnt so much about a band I already thought I knew a lot about. Especially brilliant are their walkthroughs of each album, but all episodes have great info, so many clips of rare interviews and live shows and an affection for all things TMBG. I wish there was a podcast like this for all my favourite musicians. I’m hoping that they might help to make me like the albums released between Apollo 18 and The Else too...we shall see!
