Metralla Rosa’s 56th guest is the designer and Shibari artist, Anna Kii. Anna is the creator and founder of Figure of A, a brand that merges her passion for Japanese Bondage with style and design, alongside a deep awareness of the use of the human body as a source of expression. Anna defines her pieces as feminine, edgy and architectural, as well as divinely playful, culturally challenging and sexually ergonomic.
Born in Russia, Anna brought Figure of A to life in London, the city where she currently lives, and has become a true agent provocateur within the alternative fashion scene. Through her designs, she showcases the ease with which she pushes boundaries, creating pieces that trace and traverse the body in a deliberately complementary way, effortlessly becoming the focal point of any look that incorporates them.
Figure of A offers aesthetic experiences that move away from the casual and the conventional: her harnesses, chokers and accessories are for all genders, reinterpreting bondage and shibari – the latter a cultural phenomenon born and developed in Japan and widely celebrated within contemporary queer & alternative scenes. Fully aware of the debates surrounding the risks of cultural appropriation, Anna shares her perspective with us: Shibari is a practice that has successfully spread around the world and, as far as she is concerned, when inspiration meets creative freedom, the result honours and celebrates a cultural experience – never diminishes it.
As part of London’s vibrant fetish scene, Anna describes it as a generous and welcoming community where individuality is celebrated and consent is embraced with maturity. The freedom she has found in London has been both a blessing and source of constant artistic growth.
Finally, all of Figure of A’s pieces reflect a level of dedication that only a brand selling hand crafted items can guarantee, without compromising on originality or quality. This authenticity remains alive because Anna, beyond her role as the business owner, is also a muse, performer and active promoter of London’s Shibari community. Anna knows full well that tension, experimentation and presence are non-negotiable aspects of a strong Shibari practice: liberation can be found in restraint and, challenging our relationship with posture and comfort is, in itself, a statement of principles.
In this engaging conversation, we also explore design, materials, posture, presence and advice for those approaching this scene for the first time. Anna Kii helps us understand why sensuality and freedom can, surprisingly, be found amongst knots, ropes, and bodies (suspended) in tension – making this interview deeply inspiring for both experts and curious newcomers alike.
And now, enjoy the interview!
