One would never guess that Chris Ategeka, named last year as one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30 social entrepreneurs, started life in a thatched hut with dirt walls in rural Uganda—and was in his teens before he owned his first pair of shoes. The eldest of five children, Chris Ategeka found himself orphaned at age 7 as Africa’s AIDS epidemic claimed the lives of both his parents. For the next few years, Chris struggled to balance schoolwork with the responsibilities of helping to care for himself and his younger siblings. A fortunate series of events allowed Ategeka to soon move be adopted by an American, and to later attend UC Berkeley, where he would earn a pair of degrees in mechanical engineering and study for a third. Chris founded a nonprofit company that is saving lives, one ride at a time.  Check out this episode to hear Chris talk about:

- His experiences as a child living in Uganda

- How difficult it was trying to get an education

- Being one of Forbes 30 under 30 social entrepreneurs

- His passion for flying.

- Living with his adopted family and assimilating into American cultures and the difficulties that came along with it
