[Episode 144] Lisa Mellis on how you can be a better LGBTIQ+ ally this Pride Month and beyond Sparkle and Thrive

    • Marketing

Last year, we posted a picture of Lisa, our head of brand, with her wife Jenny on their wedding day. It’s a joyous image, a celebration of the concept that love is love. 💖🏳️‍🌈

(Well, actually, Lisa and Jenny follow the philosophy of love laid down by Xena: Warrior Princess. More on that about 4 minutes into the episode. 🦸‍♀️)

It’s become one of the most popular images on our Facebook feed (whoop! 🌈). But, sadly, Lisa hasn’t always experienced acceptance.

In the week that Dame Kelly Holmes publicly came out as gay, declaring in an interview with the Sunday Mirror that she’d didn’t have role models to look up to growing up and that “school sex education was nothing to do with being gay,” Lisa draws similar parallels in her own experience. And she’s talking about them all in this week’s powerful podcast.

Here’s why you need to tune in
In fact, as you’ll discover, the conclusion Lisa drew about her future as she was growing up is pretty heartbreaking. So this Pride Month, we’re also seeking answers to how we can all be better allies to our LGBTIQ+ friends, family members and colleagues. And, as always, Lisa’s advice is on point.

Here’s what to listen out for:
[01:18] Learn the story behind Lisa’s gorgeous wedding dress and ring.

[04:16] Discover why Zena: Warrior Princess deserves a mention.

[08:24] Have we made enough progress with LGBTIQ+ rights in the UK?

[13:50] How can we be better allies to LGBTIQ+ people?

[15:58] Joy on her Christian faith and thinking differently.

[19:25] What can you do if you want to tell people about your sexual orientation?

[30:04] Why the future is brighter now.
