Fatal Attraction (1987) - Episode 66 The Rewind Movie Podcast
-
- TV & Film
Are you...discreet? We continue our past-our-bedtime trip through some very formative experiences as we dive back into the unmarked, back-of-the-closet video collection of our RErotica series for Adrian Lyne’s seminal 80s infidelity cautionary tale Fatal Attraction.
Successful lawyer, husband, and father of one Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) finds himself home alone for the weekend, and, caught in a chance rain shower with the intriguing and confident publishing house editor Alex Forrest (Glenn Close), invites her to shelter with drinks at a nearby restaurant. One thing leads to another and an illicit liaison ensues, but Dan’s impulsive act of adultery quickly turns around to bite him as Alex displays some increasingly disturbing behaviour including self-harm and stalking. Moving out of the city with wife Beth (Anne Archer), Dan hopes to escape Alex’s attentions, but the situation only escalates towards an iconic and disturbing conclusion.
A multiple Academy Award nominee (including lead and supporting acting nods respectively for Close and Archer but, interestingly, none for Douglas), the film’s British director Lyne established himself as a pioneer of the erotic thriller genre, setting the template for scores of imitators and mainstreaming the term ‘bunny boiler’. But, to contemporary viewers, has it survived the passage of time and the evolution of social attitudes to mental health and gender politics? Is its modern-day reputation a fair representation of the work, or is there more to it than just a brutal moral fable? Join film-picker Gali, Matt, Patrick and Devlin as they take a trip back to the dark underbelly of the go-go 1980s.
