On the first day of 2020's Black History Month, we look back to the 2020's WOW Festival in London to listen in to academic, author and broadcaster Emma Dabiri's conversation with Hannah Azieb Pool about her ground-breaking book Don't Touch My Hair - a personal look at the history and politics of Black hair. Next up, for the second time this series we hear from two young activists honoured at 2020's With and For Girls Awards - the annual prize which celebrates young women and girls achieving extraordinary things from across the globe.
Mila Bagdach, a 19-year-old from Germany, talks about being one of the first members of HOLLA, an organisation that teaches girls about sexual health, helps them with creative projects and supports those facing both sexism and racism. She's joined by 26 year-old Monalika Tiwari from India; a Project Director at Udan Women’s Empowerment Welfare Society, which works to prevent and liberate girls from caste-based slavery and caste-based commercial sexual exploitation in Madhya Pradesh. Plus, Maria Patsalos, an expert in Immigration Law. She works regularly with human rights organisation Liberty and founded and supervises Pink Law, a free legal advice service for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals run via Queen Mary University.
