Beef is Bull: The Environmental Impacts of Meat Labeled Grass-Fed, Sustainable, and Regenerative
When a vegan restaurant announced they were going to start serving beef, bison, chicken, and eggs, because they believed regenerative animal agriculture and not plant-based eating would reverse climate change, I knew I had to bump this topic up to the top of the queue.

Vegan in Japan (Part One)
We made history running the very first vegan group trip to Japan, and it was a huge success. While Buddhism-inspired vegetarianism has been part of the Japanese culture since around the 6th and 7th centuries, "veganism" as a concept is very new. In this first episode, I provide a frame through which to understand the challenges and the threads of eating plant-based in Japan, including
the influence of Buddhism and other factors that resulted in a mostly plant-based culture for most of its history how the move toward modernizing Japan — as of 1868 — contributed to the increase in meat consumption the regional aspect of Japanese cuisine the "foodie" aspect of Japanese cuisine, which can also lead to food rituals and ceremonies, as well as fodder for satire I also provide a number of suggestions for what to look for generally if you are traveling in Japan as a joyful vegan, including
which items typically have animal products what and how to ask for vegan options where to find the best options as a vegan Enjoy!

Pretzels Were Made for Vegans: The History of the Holy Knot
The history of the delicious, soft, pillowy pretzel goes back hundreds of years and demonstrates once again that we have more food traditions that reflect abstaining from animal products than indulging in them. Take a listen to the Medieval origins of this food, how it saved a city, and why it's associated with Easter.

Herbs and Spices: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Didn't Know to Ask
How do you store spices? How long do dried herbs keep? Can you freeze fresh herbs? How do you infuse oil, water, or vinegar with fresh herbs? What are the health benefits? How do you substitute one spice for another? When do you use fresh vs. dried. These are just SOME of the questions host Colleen Patrick-Goudreau tackles in today's episode.

Carnival Means "No Meat"
Did you know that the word CARNIVAL literally means "to remove meat." This linguistic connection reflects the historical practice of abstaining from meat consumption during the Lenten season. Customer Reviews
Always positive and inspiring !
An enjoyable listen and very informative as always . I’ve Been listening to this podcast over 8 years now and as I always learn so much ! I often wonder if I could have stayed vegan this long without it .It helps me to discuss being vegan with non vegans in a much better way , planting seeds and trying hard to not being attached to the outcome .
There is so much negativity and Colleen always puts her points across in a positive way , so that I feel upbeat afterwards ,rather than filled with gloom that what I’m doing makes no difference .

PS I gave up social media for a month in August this year ( an idea from
Colleen’s sabbatical on the dec 21 podcast ) I felt so much better for it 😊 I haven’t gone back to it. But I love this podcast ❤️
Life changing
I discovered this podcast about 8 years ago when I was a vegetarian. As I listened veganism became such an obvious progression. The message wasn’t heavy, just a clear description of the dairy and egg industry which made the progression natural. Colleen recognises the demands that moving to veganisn makes and I love her mantra “ don’t do nothing because you can’t do everything “ She equips you with ways of presenting your view in a constructive way , without aggression, always bearing in mind that your aim is to encourage people to think about animals. I love the way that she challenges “the vegan police”who seem set on promoting a negative view of veganism, reminding us of the end goal of saving the lives of the animals. Listen to the podcasts, buy her books and try to be the best you can as “an imperfect vegan in an imperfect world”
Utterly Brilliant!
After hearing from a friend how awful the dairy industry is, I wanted to learn more. It was just by chance that I dropped on the Food for Thought Podcast and I could not have been more fortunate. The first episode I listened to is entitled ‘Why Vegan? Pick a Reason. Any Reason’ and after that I knew I would never go back to eating meat, dairy or eggs. I felt upset, angry, frustrated but also elated that I was now going to be set free from any emotions of guilt that had occasionally nagged me when passed by a transport truck or field of lambs.
Colleen must have covered every aspect of veganism and compassion and in the most sincere and heartfelt way. She is incredibly knowledgeable and yet never condescending in her delivery. I am 46 years old and have never had a role model, a person other than family, whom I could look up to. Colleen is undoubtedly the most amazing inspirational role model. I’m in awe of her for many reasons including her tenderness yet incredible strength.
It is by listening to Colleen’s podcast and becoming more and more aware of the impact our actions have on the animals, environment and many other issues, that I felt confident enough to give a presentation to my work colleagues recently. It focussed mainly on the health benefits of a whole-foods plant-based diet because I’m a podiatrist and that’s what people wanted to know about. Although I took the opportunity to get across some issues surrounding animal welfare when I could! The experience was overall very positive, despite an ex-farmer “respectfully disagreeing” with almost everything I said! I stayed calm and was able to respectfully put him right, thanks to Colleen!
I also wrote to Sir David Attenborough last year to express my deep concerns about the unimaginable suffering which is inherent in animal agriculture. I referred to Colleen and asked that he listen to the aforementioned episode in the hope that he may also be moved and then share his concerns through his documentaries. He wrote back within a couple of days: “I think we should all have a basically vegetarian diet for ecological reasons as well as the ones you quote as I explain in my recent work”. Admittedly, I had hoped for more vegan than vegetarian!
My daughter, son and now even my husband have gone vegan and we all have Colleen to be eternally grateful for this.
I have several of Colleen’s cook books (love the oatmeal raisin cookies!) and will soon be participating in one of her cooking classes!
Please keep going Colleen… you are amazing!!!
Yours sincerely
Rachel xx
