Getting comfortable about having Uncomfortable Conversations around Suicide - with Andrea Newton Love-Listen-Talk-Repeat Podcast with Wendy Capewell

    • Kids & Family

INTRO
Andrea Newton has worked with organisations in the corporate world for over 26 years. She runs a business called Confident Conversations and actually they say we often teach what we most need to learn and she realises that her life could have been quite different had she had the one crucial conversation that needed to be had - maybe then she wouldn't have experienced overwhelming suicide ideation, but then she also might not have gone on to train literally hundreds of people with potentially life saving skills.

IN THIS EPISODE -
Andrea starts our conversation by saying - Mental Health is a very sensitive subject. And so people don't talk about it. And actually, when that's part of the problem, because people don't talk about it, the silence that sits around it, is actually a massive contributing factor. Because at the end of the day, you know, it's just another human condition. If I had a migraine, or if I had an abscess on my tooth, if I was in physical pain, I would have absolutely no issue in seeking out the help that I need, that would help me resolve that pain. And, you know, you and I, and you and anybody else, really, we could have that conversation quite comfortably without any shame, because people realize that if I've got a migraine, it's not something that I've created myself. And equally, that's, you know, that's how it should be when we're talking about our mental health. And also, you know, as you said, the thorny subject of of suicide, which is a subject that I talk about every day of the week. And, you know, really want to encourage other people to recognize that talking about it is actually the way that we're going to resolve that.

BIO
After many years of living a very unhappy life, Andrea felt unable to cope anymore. She had put so much energy into wearing that mask and pretending that all was well, but inside she was falling apart. Seemingly a successful businesswoman, high heels, 4x4, beautiful home, and confident in all that she did, but nobody ever really knows what goes on behind closed doors.
Eventually, the wheels fell off and following a horrific divorce that involved Court injunctions, support from the charity Refuge, and several 999 calls, Andrea felt that she just couldn't take anymore. She planned to take her own life just to end the pain that she was going through.
One night she spoke to a stranger who asked her to press pause and think of alternative actions - in that moment she promised the Universe that if she made it through, she would use her past to help others futures and intended to train as a volunteer with Samaritans, but once she was well again, she realised she could make more difference and reach more people by combining her years of leadership development expertise in the corporate world with the only UK recognised qualification in suicide intervention skills and so now helps leaders master the skill of 7 Significant Conversations that all workplaces should be having.
