157: Wiser Than Yesterday podcast - The best books of 2020

Wiser than Yesterday - The best books of 2020

Nico and I look back at what we read on the show in 2020.

Both Nico and I choose our top three books from the year that we discussed on the show and share what the biggest lessons were that really stuck with us. Looking back with hindsight at the most powerful lessons was a great tool to really show what the absolute best books were which can be less obvious in the moment.

We also had one wildcard book each that we read outside of the show but was really worth a mention.

    The top list

    Joint first

(Yes - we both had the same favourite book)

Why Buddhism is True - Robert Wright

We both highly agreed this was the worst title and the best book. So many lessons on how to just be a more content human not at the mercy of uncontrollable and incessant thoughts.
    Goodreads info

    Joint second

(Yes - we both had the same favourite second book)

    Antifragile - Nassim N. Taleb

Epic book on how to gain from disorder and find strength in setbacks.
    Goodreads info

    Nico's Number 3

    Elephant in the Brain

How we lie to ourselves about our own motives to fit in better socially, and where this trips us up.
    Goodreads info

    Sam's Number 3

    - On the Shortness of Life - Seneca

How time is the only finite resource a human has and yet spend it so frivously on the wrong things to acquire things of less importance. A guide on how to live and seek true purpose.
    Goodreads

    Nico's Wildcard

    HumanKind - Rutger Bregman

How humans have truly innate goodness and co-operation built into them and why this is the story of our success.
    Goodreads info

    Sam's Wildcard

    Siddartha - Herman Hesse

The life story of a rebel and seeker of purpose and happiness. A beautiful tale about the flow of life and the lessons we need to learn by ourselves and what is most important to value.
    Goodreads info

156: Study now, pay later - Austen Allred, CEO and co-founder Lambda School

156: Study now, pay later - Austen Allred, CEO and co-founder Lambda School

    Austen Allred

CEO Austen Allred was inspired to co-found Lambda School after spotting the major disconnect between a labor market in need of specialized talent, and the inaccessibility of training programs designed to fill that gap. His solution is a fully remote tech school with Income Share Agreements; rather than pay the Lambda School for training upfront, students pay a portion of their income after they've graduated and secured a job.

Lambda School trains people to be software engineers at no up-front cost. Instead of paying tuition, students agree to pay a percentage of their income after they’re employed, and only if they’re making more than $50k per year. If you don’t find a job, or don’t reach that level of income, you’ll never pay a cent.

Austen’s disruptive ideas on the future of education, the labor market disconnect, and the opportunity of providing opportunity at-scale have been featured in: The Harvard Business Review, The Economist, WIRED, Fast Company, TechCrunch, The New York Times, among others.

154: Startup Investing - Nick Telson, Horseplay Ventures and Pitch Deck Podcast

    Nick Telson

A serial angel investor and previously co-founded Design My Night, a nightlife discovery website, in 2010. Nick came from a background in marketing with L'Oreal launching two brands in the UK before going into Design My Night, which went on to have 8 million views a month and 250 million worth of transactional revenue with two groundbreaking B2B hospitality systems.

Design My Night was later acquired by the access group. And Nick now has founded the Horseplay Ventures group, which is an angel investing arm and startup studio kind of giving back from what helped him start his own business.

Horseplay invest in 25 companies to date across the UK and the US. And now Nick's also started the podcast called Pitch Deck, which has already got into the top five global UK business podcasts, which is pretty impressive for the fact that it literally started like six months ago now.

Engaging and welcoming

Listening to this podcast has made it feel as if I am talking to my friends. I loved how Sam made me feel welcome, even though I don't know him personally, it felt like I did. I even laughed a couple of times which isn't something I do when listening to podcasts. This has got to be one of the best podcasts I have listened to. I loved every second of it and will keep listening. Another thing I loved was how it didn't feel long. It was so refreshing and entertaining that the minutes went by.

Not that Sam Harris…

Maybe I’m missing something, but as far as I can tell, and in spite of the photo, it’s not *that* Sam Harris (of Making Sense, Waking Up fame…) So far, all I’ve heard is an English bloke who speaks so quickly as to be almost indecipherable (and yes, I am English…) Shame, as the combo of *the* Sam Harris and the growth mindset thing would have been fantastic. I did think it was a bit weird that I hadn’t heard him mention it elsewhere…
