8 episodes

In this new original series from Somethin' Else, Claudia Winkleman and Professor Tanya Byron identify struggles faced by real-life parents and family members by inviting them in and hearing their story, in a one-time unscripted session with a real person. Claudia listens in to the conversation to discover how Tanya begins to unlock the story behind the issue and help find solutions.

With topics ranging from parental estrangement, gender identity, domestic violence, trauma, inheriting mental health issues, family dynamics after cancer and raising a severely disabled daughter, How Did We Get Here? is a passionate, insightful and moving experience with clear outcomes to each episode.

This podcast doesn’t tell people how to raise their children, or reconnect with family members, rather it helps people understand why, as perfectly competent adults, they can’t put into practice what they know they should do.

Each episode passes on useful links and contacts which listeners can find in the programme notes.

chcolate girl ,

Compelling

Tanya uses her expertise to really get people to think differently and Claudia is great at seeing things from a lay person’s point of view. The real stars are the contributors - ordinary people with interesting and varied stories to tell which makes this a compelling listen.

Spare iPhone ,

Bloody brilliant.

Every episode is gripping. Tania and her gigantic brain of knowledge, Claud and her warm, sharp observational quips and humour.
Please keep doing this, forever.

Opened up my mind

I have just listened to all the episodes thus far and every single one has touched, if only like a feather, on so many aspects of my own childhood and subsequent adult experiences. It has put several things into perspective regards where my mind had been at many points in my life. At 61 I really am so pleased to hear someone out there tackling emotional and mental health issues in a public manor. I am arriving finally in a place of contentment and leaving the self loathing behind. This podcast could be that enlightening point at which someone will understand they need to seek help as they are not ‘abnormal’ I truly believe it could be the turning point for someone at a time in their lives where it will open up comfort and acceptance of life earlier than for me. Claudia and Tanya you are both inspirational. I shall enjoy learning more as I listen to all the future episodes.
