    Mutant Hands are a husband and wife creative team who combine their illustration and animation skills. Made up of illustrator Jing Zhang & animator James Wignall, Mutant Hands know all about how to balance work and life whilst also making sure the get the most out of the work they create.

    Having been based in London, Jing and James now lives in the beautiful Harrogate in Yorkshire after spending their working careers being based in London. As part of that transition Jing and James touch on their passion for remote working, and not having to be based in the 'big city' to achieve the life they want.

    Additionally, Jing talks about not being ashamed of focussing on the commercial work whilst building your business. And James, talks about the importance of craft.

    Ben is a very open, engaging and knowledgeable person who is clearly enjoying his journey as an illustrator.

    Ben is the visual steer of the Professor Astrocat Children's Books, and also an avid guest lecturer around the subject of illustration and freelance life. Being a father of a young child (and with another on the way at the time of this podcast). Ben is at the stage of his life where he needs consistency in his work and following 10 years in the industry is at a point where he understands how to do that.

    Ben also talks about his love / hate relationship with social media. And why having a healthy relationship with promotion is absolutely essential.

    Lastly, Ben is a very reflective person who is very aware of his actions and his awareness of time. Having been employed full time and now freelance, Ben understands what is needed to make him tick over.

Great insight

These podcasts give a great insight into the world of freelance illustration. I am already a big fan of the featured guests and to hear their thoughts and exepriences is going to be very valuable to me going forward as a freelance illustrator.
