Life is Beautiful... until it isn't The Pod Charles Cinecast

    • Film History

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas discover the beauty of life, even during the darkest of times.
We continue our WAR, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?... HOLLYWOOD MOVIES arc – where we will be talking all things war movies and war adjacent movies – and we finally get to one of those war adjacent films with Roberto Benigni's LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (1997).
Set during World War II, this fairy tale-like film tells the story of a Jewish-Italian waiter who meets the love of his life in a beautiful schoolteacher. The pair eventually settle down and have a child together. Just when their idyllic life is taking off, their world is turned upside down, when they are shipped off to a concentration camp in Nazi Germany. In order to keep his son safe from fear, the father pretends the whole experience is an intricate game with a special prize for the winner up for grabs.
This Academy Award-winning feature is both joyous and utterly devastating. The film was not without controversy, but it is one of the best stories about sacrifice, family and the human experience during the worst of times you'll find in our war season.
